    Job summary

    An opportunity has arisen for the position of an InterventionalRadiographer [Band 6] to work in the Radiology Theatres at LTHT.

    We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individualwho would ideally have some experience in angiographic procedures to join ourteam of professionals. A comprehensivetraining package will be provided.

    Amongst your many duties will be a responsibility for thefurther developing close working relationships with allied AHPs and Nursinggroups as part of a multidisciplinary Radiology Theatres team.

    You will be professionally and operationally accountable tothe Radiographer Team Managers.

    The department is based across 2 sites and has 6 theatres, 3of which are equipped with Philips systems and 3 with Siemens systems ( including1 x biplane and 1 situated within the vascular surgical theatre). You will beinvolved in provision of radiographic support both in and out of hours [oncall] of an extensive range of adult and paediatric interventional procedures.These will include (but not limited to) stroke thrombectomy, TACE, cerebralaneurysm repair (including 3D imaging and CT), endovascular aortic aneurysmrepair, peripheral vascular disease, venous malformations, non- vascularintervention to name but a few. We also provide a vascular ultrasound servicethrough 2 ultrasound rooms.

    Main duties of the job

    Candidate will provide image guidance for patientsundergoing elective and acute, diagnostic and sometimes complex multi-organvascular procedures such as (but not limited to) embolisation of tumours andhaemorrhage, angioplasty, stenting, nephrostomy insertion, tumour ablations,acute urological and complex vascular procedures, aortic aneurysm repair,cerebral aneurysm and AVM embolisation and stroke thrombectomy.

    Candidate will undertake all the professional andtechnical requirements of the post as a State Registered qualified radiographerwith the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), while working as anautonomous practitioner within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust RadiologyDirectorate.

    Candidate will perform a wide variety of specialisedradiography procedures and examinations within Radiology Theatres performingangiographic procedures. Patients presenting for examination have diversebackgrounds and may have complex physical and/or psychological conditions.

    Candidate will manage personal workloads, authorising andprioritising radiological examinations as appropriate for clinical need.

    Candidate will work as a clinical specialist as part of amulti-disciplinary team providing high standards of patient care, whilstfollowing policies and procedures as specified by the Radiology ManagementTeam.

    The post holder also undertakes the supervision andspecialist clinical training of radiographers, undergraduate students and otherstaff as appropriate.

    Job responsibilities

    Undertake all the professional and technical requirementsof the post as a State Registered qualified radiographer with the Health andCare Professions Council (HCPC), while working as an autonomous practitionerwithin Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Radiology Directorate.

    To perform a wide variety of specialised radiographyprocedures and examinations within Radiology Theatres performing angiographicprocedures. Patients presenting for examination have diverse backgrounds andmay have complex physical and/or psychological conditions.

    To manage personal workloads, authorising andprioritising radiological examinations as appropriate for clinical need.

    To work as a clinical specialist as part of amulti-disciplinary team providing high standards of patient care, whilstfollowing policies and procedures as specified by the Radiology ManagementTeam.

    The post holder also undertakes the supervision andspecialist clinical training of radiographers, undergraduate students and otherstaff as appropriate.

    The post-holder will be responsible for their ownworkload for a defined area within Radiology theatres, working on their owninitiative without direct supervision and managing their own case load. Seniorradiographers will work within their own scope of practice as defined by theHCPC.

    To contribute to the development and delivery of aneffective and responsive radiology service.

    Undertake practical training and clinical supervision ofradiographers, student radiographers, assistant practitioners and radiographerhelpers/assistants as appropriate, according to department protocols andschemes of work.

    To assess, justify, plan, implement and evaluate a widerange of specialist radiographic examinations and duties as an autonomouspractitioner in this specialist field.

    Maintain high level of technical and theoretical skillsthough personal Continual Professional Development (CPD), in accordance withthe requirements of the HCPC.

    Participate on on call provision across both mainhospital sites.

    Radiographers will have achieved the range of clinical,professional and personal competencies according to the LTHT Band 6Radiographer Competency Framework or the equivalent competency based link gradeagreement.

    Demonstrate and expand effective leadership skills.

    Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the specialisedclinical examination in order to produce high quality images.

    Have an understanding of the organisational structure andworking practices of this specialist area.

    To have a working knowledge of the professional standardsset out by the College and Society of Radiographers, Health and CareProfessions Council and other National Standards National ServiceFrameworks.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

    Clinical Responsibilities:

    1. To assess clinical authorisation of radiologyreferrals in line with the National Regulations, Ionising Radiation (MedicalExposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R), 2000 and local protocols.

    2. Act in the role of an Operator and Practitioner*,within own scope of practice, by clinically justifying imaging requests fromthe clinical information provided referring to the work areas Protocols &Technique Guidelines as a reference if necessary. *as defined in IRMER 2000

    3. To work without supervision, taking legalresponsibility and accountability for all aspects of your own work.

    4. To liaise with referral source where clarification isrequired regarding selection of the most clinically appropriate imagingexamination.

    5. To act as a point of advice for imaging referrers.

    6. To act as a point of reference for patient enquiriesregarding their referral, for all issues relating to hospital attendance forexample; radiation protection issues, Patient Advice and Liaison Service(PALS), Interpretation services and freedom of information services.

    7. To act as a patient advocate in radiation protectionissues.

    8. To ensure patients have given informed consent priorto radiographic examinations and have the knowledge to work within a legalframework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

    9. Applying a high level of manual dexterity in acquiringaccurate, high quality diagnostic images, whilst accommodating a full range ofpatient presentations and adapting standard technique when necessary.

    10. To undertake the comprehensive assessment andappropriate examination of patients including those who present with multiplepathologies/conditions. These patients require the use of advancedinvestigative and analytical skills to select and utilise the most appropriateapproach to their imaging.

    11. The ability to work in a stressful environmentimparting contentious/difficult information on a daily basis.

    12. The ability to deal effectively with emotional and/oraggressive patients and/or carers on a daily basis. This will necessitate theuse of effective communication skills to motivate and reassure

    13. To use a range of verbal and non verbal communicationtools to communicate effectively with patients about their treatment andexamination. This will include patients who have difficulties in understandingor communicating

    14. Liaise with relevant teams on aspects of patient safety,for example, child protection team.

    15. To operate advanced software on specialistRadiological equipment, requiring excellent hand-eye co-ordination and manualdexterity.

    16. To review images and ensure that additional imagesare undertaken where appropriate, prior to patient departure from thedepartment.

    17. Demonstrate reflective practice based on knowledgeand skills so as to formulate and deliver diagnostic imaging based on soundknowledge of evidence based practice and imaging options using clinicalassessment, reasoning and skills and knowledge of other techniques.

    18. To ensure that images are presented for reportingpurposes in a timely and accurate manner.

    19. To participate in the delivery of an out of hoursservice.

    20. To ensure appropriate infection control measures areimplemented and utilised where necessary. Paying particular attention topersonal protection as well as the management of equipment and linenscontaminated by bodily fluids and where necessary seek professional advice.

    21. To represent the radiography service at multidisciplinary team meetings to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service and diagnostic service.

    22. To be responsible for a high standard of care,comfort and clinical well being of the patient, during their examination in thedepartment. This will involve on occasion delivering some elements normallyundertaken by nursing colleagues.

    Operational Responsibilities:

    1. To liaise with other clinical and non-clinicaldepartments within the hospital and various external sources in order toprovide a quality service to patients and clinicians.

    2. To effectively liase with all disciplines of staffwithin and without the x-ray department, giving support when necessary.

    3. To show initiative in being able to provide solutionsto service delivery problems, in unforeseen circumstances, using the availableresources effectively to promote smooth delivery of service/patient care.

    4. To provide guidance to external users regarding thedeployment of radiographic resources Theatre usage.

    5. To participate in the safe transfer of patients andequipment within the department and hospital, using manual handling guidelinesand risk assessments.

    6. To communicate negotiated changes to staff rosters to appropriatestaff.

    7. To organise personal and departmental workload in linewith clinical priorities.

    8. To show initiative, adapt and quickly respond tochanges in service, patient or departmental need.

    9. To report deficits in the data integrity of the ITsystems in use in Radiology & the Trust

    10. To contribute to regular departmental meetings.

    11. Dissemination of information to others.

    12. To reflect on areas of work and communicate areas ofdeficit or potential advancement.

    13. To report clinical, non-clinical and radiationincidents in line with Trust and departmental risk management policies.

    14. To assist in the training and promotion of accuratepatient and examination data into a PACS and CRIS and implement back upmeasures in times of system failure.

    15. Liaise with external sources to manage workfloweffectively; for example, portering, domestic services and Radiology managers,when necessary.

    Managerial and Professional Responsibilities

    1. Tomaintain and develop current knowledge of evidence based practice in specialistareas developing and complying with increasing range of technical applicationsavailable on Imaging Equipment to image a variety of conditions and patienttypes.

    2. To assistin the production of staff rosters for effective and efficient deployment ofstaff, as required.

    3. Tocommunicate effectively and work collaboratively with medical, nursing andother professional colleagues to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service

    4. To beaware of and assist with the implementation of a MAJAX procedure.

    5. To assistin the record keeping and organisation of mandatory training, as required.

    6. To befamiliar with the trust complaints procedure and are aware of how to advise andappropriately direct complaints.

    7. Toundertake initial assessments of equipment faults, report and documentappropriately.

    8. Assist inregular Quality Assurance (QA), including equipment testing and reject analysis

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • BSc (or equivalent) in Diagnostic Radiography or Diploma of the College in Radiographers (Diagnostic)
  • State Registration (HCPC)
  • Desirable

  • Attendance at courses such as IV cannulation, Student Assessment, etc
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Minimum 1 years post graduate experience, working as a radiographer (this may be reduced for an exceptional candidate)
  • Knowledge of radiographic equipment and its use in different clinical environments, including specialist areas
  • Knowledge of current trends in radiographic practice and health care issues
  • Computer skills (word, excel, powerpoint, PACS)
