    Job summary

This post is an ideal opportunity for a doctor wishing to develop educational insight and experience. Academic Teaching Fellows work with module leads to plan and deliver all aspects of undergraduate medical education to first and second year medical students. The role has an emphasis on demonstrating clinical skills and providing clinical context to student learning in the first and second years of medical school. As part of the Academic Teaching Fellow team, the position offers the opportunity to be involved in a variety of academic tasks including student assessment and applicant selection. Additionally, there is an opportunity to apply for a funded University of Buckingham PGCert in Medical Education, for those completing a 12-month post working a minimum of FTE (3 days a week). The PGCert compliments the role of an Academic Teaching Fellow, evidences your pedagogical development and can contribute to recognition of Fellowship with Advance HE.

    Main duties of the job

The primary role of an Academic Teaching Fellow is to facilitate group work sessions that provide a clinical context to the medical curriculum. This ensures the integration of biomedical science in a clinical context for the students' learning in the first and second years of Medical School.

Secondary to this, Academic Teaching Fellows may be required to participate in a variety of tasks as opportunities arise. These include:

  • Written exam question writing, reviewing and marking
  • OSCE writing, reviewing and assessing
  • Filming videos for the clinical skills foundation course and OSCE training
  • Participating in the student selection process
  • Showcasing our facilities on University open days
  • Reviewing and developing teaching materials
  • Delivering revision sessions
  • Supervising Student Selected Components
  • Acting as a personal tutor for students in the first and second years of Medical School
  • Participating in Quality Improvement Projects within the faculty
  • This list is not exhaustive but demonstrates the scope of the Academic Teaching Fellow role within the Medical School. From time to time, you may be asked to perform additional tasks at the discretion of the Medical School leadership team.

    About us

The University of Buckingham has a unique atmosphere, unlike that of any other higher educational institution. Despite being the UK's smallest University and the only independent University to hold a Royal Charter, Buckingham has staff from over 25 countries, making it a truly distinctive work environment.

The University of Buckingham is thus a place where teachers, support staff and students will get to know each other personally and staff have the opportunity for full involvement in University life. The University's surrounding area has many picturesque walks, beautiful villages and heritage buildings of national importance which make a very pleasurable working environment.

The University of Buckingham created the UK's first independent, not-for-profit, Medical School in 2015. Our guiding philosophy is to produce highly ethical, honest, and compassionate doctors who will put the patient first. Our condensed year MBChB programme is derived from a well-established curriculum, and we now have an intake of around 120 students per year. Our medical school is small enough for our students to be part of a coherent and supportive community, and large enough to provide all the experience needed to become a medical practitioner. We received our GMC accreditation in May 2019 and our first intake took up their Foundation Training in August 2019.
