    Permanent
    Description

    Job summary

This post is suited to a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist who has demonstrable experience working in a cellular pathology laboratory environment who has completed appropriate post-registration specialty training ( IBMS Specialist Portfolio). Due to the high level of autonomy, broad remit and independent working associated with this post trainee scientists will not be shortlisted.

The post is based in the Centre for Liver and Gastrointestinal Research based in the Institute for Biomedical Research within the University of Birmingham which is co-located on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham site.

The departmental remit is to support research and development in the clinical Liver Unit and is primarily involved in experimental research, clinical trials and the evaluation of new tests and is dedicated to improving the life of patients with liver disease.

The team comprises both University and NHS staff with this role providing infrastructure and expertise in both routine histological procedures as well as broader laboratory investigations. This partnership allows CLGR to take discoveries in liver disease from the laboratory into novel treatments for patient management.

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist the post holder will be directly involved with all aspects of laboratory activity and will be encouraged to undertake personal research projects under the supervision of the principal investigators.

Due to the unique nature of this role visits/enquiries are encouraged.

    Main duties of the job

They will also be encouraged to actively participate in R&D projects.

The department handles predominantly human samples and fluids but may also occasionally include samples from animal models.

The post holder will be expected to be involved with validation and verification of new techniques and troubleshooting / problem resolution. The role involves daily interaction with clinicians, scientists and technicians. Good communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a larger group are essential. The post holder must work efficiently and reprioritise workload to meet deadlines.

The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within any area in the department and will be expected to undertake any training required and to maintain competency including and a specialist level understanding of all the processes they participate in.

All professionally registered staff are expected to maintain evidence of CPD which should be up to date and relevant to the post. Specialist training and development would be encouraged and considered where appropriate.
