Job description


Role Description
***The Senior Adviser will work closely with teams across Natural England as we identify strategic opportunities for improvement and innovation in our approach to data science and data engineering to deliver best available evidence. You will ensure that these improvements are underpinned by good data management and ethics.


This role will:

  • Engage with teams across Natural England to advise on practical steps required to minimise potential harms that come from data collection, use and sharing throughout the data life cycle.
  • Support responsible innovation across Natural England Data Science Services by ensuring that data ethics principles are at the heart of Natural England's adoption of new techniques and processes to maximise the benefits of Artificial Intelligence and datadriven technology.
  • Provide leadership in the delivery and communication of Natural England's policies and guidance surround data management, working across the analysis directorate to understand the existing data and evidence landscape.
  • Show leadership across our data management practices and identify opportunities for continuous improvement and suggest potential actions to minimise risk through data transformation projects.
  • Ensure high standards of data governance and compliance with ethical requirements, particularly offering expert advice on specific issues such as data licensing and ethical data storage. Help to put in place project data standards, processes, and systems to ensure delivery of highquality outcomes to internal and external customers.
  • Facilitate teams across Natural England to navigate complex data ethics challenges through the development and delivery of relevant guidance, workshop sessions or onetoone advice.
  • Engage with data science and machine learning processes to understand and develop transparency to our data and Artificial Intelligence processes. Support the review of data quality and limitations.
  • Resolve problems that involve detailed investigation and analysis and the exercise of judgment in making recommendations or determining appropriate action for resolution e.g. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or data licensing issues
  • Lead on the development and publication of guidance surrounding the ethical challenges presented by Natural England's use of geospatial data, including satellite imagery.
  • Provide functional and technical leadership and capability building of Evidence Services colleagues; working to develop their skills and experience.
