Description
This role is known internally as 'Principal Engineer'As our Systems Engineer you'll work on a range of instrumentation and metrology projects for NPL and provide the technical expertise that informs the strategy that helps shape our site infrastructure.
You will have experience of guiding multidisciplinary engineering/science teams and will have been involved in all stages of the instrument development lifecycle, from early concept development through to delivery and reporting.
You'll work as a key part of the project leadership team alongside the project manager and head scientist.You will be responsible for the requirements engineering, overall system architecture, assembly, integration, validation & verification, installation, commissioning, and delivery of scientific instrumentation.
Working closely with the Technical Infrastructure Manager, you'llsupport withthe development and implementation of the technical strategy.This means working with facilities management to monitor and deliver infrastructure-based projects,as well asacting as the head technical input to all site infrastructure projects.
At every stage you're looking to identify that the highest quality technical solutions areapplied, in a cost-effective wayand within schedule.
You'llalso review technical submissions,generate business cases and use your technical knowledge to appraise equipment and make recommendations for further efficiencies and compliance.
What's more,you'll ensure thatall safety procedures are followed and reported.What you'll be doing:
Working with science teams to develop instrument requirements.
Definition of the overall system architecture, alongside NPL scientists
Definition and control of internal and external interfaces.
Application of end-to-end systems analysis and modelling.
Development of instrument performance models, manufacturing and alignment tolerances, and component specifications.
Derivation of and management of technical budgets/tolerances.
Development of assembly, integration and test plans to verify compliance with requirements.
Management of the assembly, integration and testing of systems and sub-systems of instruments and scientific products
Verification and acceptance testing at sub-system and system level. Stakeholder engagement and customer management alongside the project leads
Documentation of System Design, procedures and test results, according to NPL's internal Engineering process.
Liaising with other specialists at NPL to ensure performance is maintained and requirements are met throughout the instrument development lifecycle.

This will be dependent on the kind of role you do and part of the business you work inWhat you can bring to the role:
Degree in Physics / an applicable engineering subject area (Optical, Mechanical, Electronics, Systems or Software), or equivalent experience.
Industry systems engineering experience with the architecture of complex systems.
Ability to manage multidisciplinary science/engineering teams.
Experience in developing and building instrumentation systems.
Knowledge of a wide range of technologies.
Excellent analytical and technical problem solving.
Exceptional written and oral presentation skills
Project Management skills
