    Assistant Genetic Technologist for Research Band 4 Job overview

    Do you want to help us transform the quality of NHS prenatal diagnostic and genetic services? We are seeking an enthusiastic assistant technologist to join our team of researchers based in the North Thames Rare and Inherited Disease laboratory at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Our team is delivering transformation in patient care by developing safer and more comprehensive genetic diagnostic tests, both pre- and postnatally.

This Band 4 post is available immediately for a year initially. This is an ideal secondment opportunity that will give you the chance to learn about transnational research and the technologies we use in more detail, how we use cutting edge platforms to improve our diagnostic capabilities, experience transnational research and generally prepare you for the next stage in your career in laboratory medicine.

    Main duties of the job

    General

    • To follow established procedures and assist in the maintenance, preparation and review of operating policies
    • Comply with health and safety policies
    • Assist in quality assurance procedures
    • Be flexible to changing demands in workload
    • Attend training courses as required
    • Participate in an annual Personal Development Review (PDR)
    • Data entry of patient sample details
    • Recording results / QC Information on laboratory information system (EPIC Beaker).
    • Filing and scanning of patient and laboratory documentation

    Technical duties

    • Laboratory tests are set up as appropriate for the designated team and prepared for analysis by genetic technologists / scientific staff.
    • Registration of research samples received into the laboratory
    • Sample processing including extraction, quantitation, storage and dispatch.
    • Participate in general rota of technical staff for basic lab duties such as stock control, equipment maintenance and general housekeeping duties.
    • Preparation of reagents
    • Participate in training sessions as required.

    Person specification GOSH Culture and Values

    • HNC/HND or Diploma in science (or equivalent)
    • Biological Science / Genetics Degree (or equivalent experience)

    Experience/Knowledge

    • Laboratory experience
    • Able to work under supervision
    • Willing to undertake both administrative and technical duties as required
    • Experience in molecular genetic / cytogenetic laboratories
    • Able to work under supervision Knowledge of working in a procedure-led healthcare setting
    • Experience with laboratory information management systems

    Skills/Abilities

    • Demonstrable basic laboratory skills
    • Able to communicate effectively both verbally, by email and by appropriate documentation
    • Experience of molecular genetic / cytogenetic techniques
    • Demonstrable Attention to detail
