    Required to fill these new posts within the Neonatal Department at the Leeds General Infirmary. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic team in one of the busiest neonatal services in the UK.

    The regional Neonatal Service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust is one of the largest in the UK and has a combined capacity of 69 cots (30 intensive care/high dependency). The service is currently provided across two sites, Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital. We have a strong track record in research and have a heavy emphasis on family Integrated Care. There are 1700 admissions per annum to the Neonatal Service which accepts both in-utero and post-natal transfers for specialist services and ongoing care from all over Yorkshire and Humber and often further afield. The service is one of only two in the UK with all tertiary paediatric specialties including cardiology, neurology and neurosurgery, hepatology, nephrology and paediatric surgery. All of the tertiary paediatric services are located in the Leeds Childrens Hospital, within Leeds General Infirmary situated in Leeds city centre. There are currently plans to centralise all of maternity and neonatal services in a state of the art new build on the LGI site, alongside a new Leeds Childrens Hospital. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

    Main duties of the job

    The duties of this post will be to provide consultant led clinical duties on the Leeds General Infirmary and St Jamess sites (5 in 13 weeks), alongside the 12 other neonatologists. On call duties are 1:6 weeknights (LGI or SJUH) and 1:6 weekends (cross-site split weekends). The neonatal on call rota is separate from paediatrics and is currently resident until midnight.

    The successful applicant should possess MRCPH (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

    You should have established skills in Tertiary (level 3) Neonatal care and its related specialties. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

    In relation to this post, In relation to this post, the Leeds Centre for Newborn Care was created in 1998 with the merger of the two acute trusts. The service comprises one level 3 unit (NICU) at LGI and a combined low dependency comprising SCBU and Transitional Care at SJUH, each attached to a busy delivery suite. The neonatal service is one of the busiest in the country with 1700 admissions per year, providing 4000 intensive care days and a further 4200 high dependency care days per year. There are approximately 10,000 deliveries across the two sites.

    Currently both sites are covered by a single consultant over the weekend, from 1700 on Friday until 0830 Monday, and is split into 24 hour on-calls between two consultants. The advertised post is part of an expansion of the consultant team in order to provide dedicated, separate on call cover to both sites.

    2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

    To provide weekday consultant cover and weeknight on call (1 in 6 alternating site) to the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Leeds General Infirmary and the Local Neonatal Unit at St Jamess Hospital.

    To provide weekend consultant led care to the two regional neonatal units within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (1 in 6 weekends).

    To provide, in conjunction with the existing consultants, supervision of neonatal care on the NICU, postnatal and transitional care wards. This will require working on both neonatal units by rotation.

    To assist in delivering the induction and training programme for junior doctors. To contribute to the effective training and clinical supervision of medical staff within the neonatal service.

    To liaise with the neonatal outreach team and community paediatic team provide planned discharge and follow up of neonatal graduates.

  • MB BS (or equivalent).
  • MRCPCH or equivalent qualification
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice - YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE STATED ON YOUR APPLICATION IF YOU WANT TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE POST.

  • Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.
