    Our company, the Incubator for Artificial Intelligence ( - , has a program dedicated to leveraging AI for the greater good, aiming to enhance the lives of citizens by focusing on priority projects within public services. We are a technical team committed to building and learning rapidly to deliver effective solutions.

    Expanding on the work of the No10 Data Science Team (10DS) and other leading technology teams in the civil service, our team experiments and demonstrates what is achievable. We have recently announced the addition of 40 new roles to establish a scale-up function that will transition successful incubated projects into full production.

    About the Role

    We are looking for individuals to join our radical innovation team who are collaborative, energetic, action-oriented, and have a forward-thinking attitude. This position is ideal for those interested in working within a startup-like environment.

    Within the Incubator, software engineering is a crucial discipline alongside AI engineering. While AI Engineers focus on implementing and evaluating machine learning and LLM technology, software engineers, including front end developers, are responsible for integrating this technology into functional software that enhances user experience and meets defined goals.

    Key Responsibilities include:

    As a front end developer within a delivery team, you will collaborate with researchers, designers, software developers, and AI engineers to deliver exceptional services. Projects at the Incubator vary, ranging from quick prototypes to fully operational services. You should feel comfortable working with both approaches.

    You will be tasked with:

    • Delivering clean, semantic HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create high-quality, user-friendly experiences.
    • Developing robust frontends that prioritize progressive enhancement and work seamlessly across different devices.
    • Utilizing your expertise in frontend frameworks to help the team make informed decisions on technology adoption.
    • Sharing knowledge through activities like pair programming.
    • Promoting coding standards and best practices, particularly for JavaScript.
    • Applying CSS methodologies like preprocessors (e.g., SCSS) and naming conventions (BEM).
    • Working with design systems such as the Design System.
    • Leveraging knowledge of web application security and accessibility standards (OWASP, WCAG).
    • Supporting team management and performance by advocating for diversity, inclusion, providing regular constructive feedback, and driving continuous improvement.

    Person Specification

    Essential Skills

    • Proficient in frontend development (JavaScript, HTML, CSS).
    • Capable of writing clean, maintainable code and understanding automated testing.
    • Skilled in developing accessible code following a progressive enhancement approach.
    • Able to transform designs into functional code accurately and collaborate effectively with software engineers and designers to meet requirements.
    • Capable of quickly prototyping in code using tools such as the prototype kit.
    • Ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical colleagues to translate user needs into requirements.
    • Proactive in acquiring new skills.

    Experience in products involving AI components like chat interfaces is advantageous but not mandatory. Willingness to learn python, used in our backend services, is a plus.

    Office Attendance

    A minimum of 60% of your work time should be dedicated to your main workplace. Any official business conducted in other locations will also contribute to this attendance requirement.

    Aside from a salary of �53,400, Cabinet Office contributes �14,418 towards your Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Benefits include:
