    Job summary

    We are looking for experienced, compassionate and forward thinking midwives to join our Jessop Wing team as Pastoral Lead (full time and part time positions available).This is a fixed term contract for a year and will involve supporting a number of Early career midwives joining us in October. The role will involve having overall responsibility to ensure ECM, existing and Internationally educated midwives are supported and can successfully demonstrate clinical competence and evidence based care.

    As a Pastoral Midwife at the Jessop Wing, you will lead on :

  • Supporting Early Career Midwives throughout their preceptorship journey
  • Support International Midwives
  • Support return to career Midwives
  • Work with the leadership and PMA team in relation to retention
  • Provide clinical support within maternity services
  • Provide individualised support as required

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder(s) will have a monthly one to one with the Education Matron, where objectives, ideas for improvement will be discussed.

    The post holder (s) will be the Preceptorship Lead for Maternity services, based on the new preceptorship national

    The post holder(s) will be allocating all preceptees their preceptors and oversee their preceptorship program progress.

    The post holder(s) will facilitate /organise preceptorship study days depending on the needs of ECMs, IMs at regular intervals throughout preceptorship period, following discussion with the Senior Midwifery Team, linking to a training needs analysis.

    The post holder (s) will support, plan and facilitate recruitment open days for student midwives, collaborating with the Senior Leadership Team and LMNS.

    The post holder(s) will help shape the role of the legacy midwives and co-work with them to support the ECMs, IMs and those returning to practice.

    The post holder(s) will promote the awareness of staff retention to the wider maternity team, together with suggested interventions to be considered needed to achieve such a goal.

    The Directorate of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology is based at the Jessop Wing which is linked to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The maternity unit has over 6800 births per year and is a Regional Tertiary Maternity Service with a Level 3 Neonatal Unit of 44 cots. A tertiary Gynae-Oncology service and a changing Gynaecology Service, which includes an Assisted Conception Unit, complete the services within the Directorate.

    This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 1 year due to the post being externally funded. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the ongoing source of the external funding and the requirement for the post to be maintained.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Registered midwife with significant post registration experience
  • Post graduate degree or working towards
  • Commitment to professional development and evidence of continuing professional development
  • To have completed the national PEAP programme for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998.
  • Desirable

  • Professional midwifery advocate qualification
  • Recognised management / leadership qualification (or working towards)
  • Personal Qualities

  • Self-starter, able to work independently on own initiative and to meet deadlines.
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Experience of service development, leading and managing change
  • Experience of working across organisational boundaries
  • Experience of guideline and policy development and implementation
  • Conversant with NMC rules and code of governing practice
  • Knowledge of current reports/guidelines relating to maternity care
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and risk assessment
  • Confident to work in all Clinical Settings
