    The City of Birmingham is seeking an Aircraft Museum Restoration Technician (AMRT) to be responsible for the restoration of aircraft exhibits. Such individual research aircraft exhibits in an effort to build, refurbish, and maintain various types of aircraft of historical value for display in a museum. AMRT also educates the public regarding airplanes, jets, helicopters, gliders, and other aircrafts to further the public's appreciation and enjoyment of the museum's facilities. The AMRT is expected to use various tools and may be required to perform some light to heavy lifting on occasion.

    Ideal/Preferred Qualification:

  • A&P Certification and/or Avionics Certification.

    • Minimum Qualifications:

  • Driver's license.
  • Experience in metal and wood fabrication such as sheet metal, wood construction, painting, and/or using the appropriate hand and power tools.
  • Experience performing engine maintenance, repair, and/or restoration.

    • Job Duties:

  • Supervises the museum's restoration building and facilities.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises museum volunteer staff.
  • Restores aircraft, maintains indoor and outdoor exhibits, and orders supplies.
  • Operates museum equipment such as welding equipment, drill press and various types of shop equipment to restore and conserve museum pieces.
  • Supervises volunteers working in the building on museum collection objects.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to increase volunteer enrollment.
  • Encourages volunteer participation and museum activities.
  • Trains volunteer staff on restoration and conservation techniques.
  • Keeps inventory of shop supplies and tools.
  • Maintains all exhibits on museum grounds (indoor and outdoor) (e.g., cleans, repairs, paints, etc.)
  • Maintains shop equipment and tools (e.g., services tools and equipment, repairs, troubleshoots, etc.)
  • Orders shop supplies and tools as needed with approval of management.
  • Works to preserve and restore aircraft in the museum collection.

    • Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary range: $39,312 - $61,006 (starting salary is commensurate with education and experience)
  • Flexible work arrangements including remote/telework options for up to two days per week and alternative work schedules (e.g., four 10-hour days). Such flexible work arrangements must be approved by the Department Director.

    • Critical Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of basic electronics to include circuitry design and repair.
  • Knowledge of general mechanical principles (e.g., function of system, gear and belt rotations, and speed variability and timing).
  • Knowledge of hand tools, including their designs and uses.
  • Knowledge of power tools, including their designs and uses.
  • Knowledge of the best practices for moving and transporting large and small aircraft and materials.
  • Knowledge of the methods involved, and the materials and tools used in the construction or repair of small structures (e.g., small buildings, exhibit cases, displays, objects, etc.).
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of caring for collection pieces (e.g., proper conditions for installation, storage, packaging, handling, etc.) as well as methods and equipment used (e.g., chemicals, tools, etc.) in conservation, preservation and restoration.

    • Work Environment:

    Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities such as workshop, warehouse, or station. Work involves use of various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.

    Physical Demands:

    Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
