Hours of work and timings:
Pro Rata, 32 hours a week between 22:00 & 06:00, working a 4 on 4 off pattern. This is inclusive of weekends and bank holidays, as standard.
Salary range:
£25,350 FTE based on 37.5 hours per week. You will be starting on £20,000, rising to £21,632 upon successfully passing probation.
Holidays: 20 days holiday plus bank holidays off in lieu.
Role description
King's Education is seeking a dedicated and responsible Night Porter to join our team at the student residence, where we have a mixture of under-18 and over-18 students residing.
As a Night Porter, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our students during night-time hours.
You will help maintain statutory compliance as directed by the Department of Education for Boarding Schools and work alongside the Accommodation Team, led by the Head of Boarding.
Your primary responsibilities will include assisting with curfew checks, monitoring students entering or leaving the premises, aiding in case of emergencies, such as fire evacuations and completing patrols of the grounds and Flats.
Kings Oxford is registered as a boarding school with the Department for Education and all compliance is in line with the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools and the Ofsted Common Assessment Framework and Standards for Inspection of Boarding and Residential Schools.
This post carries a portion of responsibility to safeguarding, having to be level 3 trained (or willing to obtain) and be experienced in dealing with matters in this area.
This job would suit someone who would like to work alone and be autonomous as you will be alone past 23:00.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct curfew checks to ensure students adhere to designated curfew hours.
- Monitor students entering or leaving the premises during nighttime hours, ensuring their safety and security.
- Complete regular patrols of the grounds and flats to ensure students are in their bedrooms/flats.
- Assist in handling emergencies, such as fire evacuations, by following established protocols and providing support to students and staff.
- Report any incidents, breaches of security, or maintenance issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to any student inquiries or concerns during your shift.
- Maintain accurate records of activities and incidents occurring during your shift.
- Collaborate with the Senior Houseparent, Head of Boarding and accommodation team to address any issues or concerns related to student welfare and safety.
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanour when interacting with students, staff, and visitors.
- The completion of accommodation admin duties directed by your manager or Head of Boarding.
- All members of the accommodation team working within an under18 setting are required to be Safeguarding Level 3 trained and be confident in responding to matters in this area.
- To be a First aider and Fire Marshall as standard

Applicants must be able to demonstrate
Professional skills:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong observational skills with the ability to detect and respond to potential security risks or incidents effectively
- Ability to remain calm and composed in emergencies.
Personal attributes/experience:
- Previous experience working within an education setting/Accommodation preferable
- A good understanding of the management of safeguarding within a boarding school
- Previous work with students is desirable, but a willingness to learn will be taken into consideration.
- Someone with firm boundaries and confidence, to confront students who could become argumentative is essential.
- Problemsolving skills and a strong initiative to act independently are essential.
- The ability to work independently, being able to act and respond appropriately and quickly to different student situations
