Job Title: Special Education Teacher (SEND)

Location: Oakwood Specialist College, Yate, BS37 5JB

Salary: £27,300 to £33,600 per year based on 40 hours per week, 42.4 weeks per year

    Contract Type: Permanent

Every individual deserves access to quality education. That's where you step in. As a Special Education Teacher, you'll ensure that young adults with diverse neurological profiles (aged 16-25) have optimal educational opportunities available.

Our curriculum isn't just about qualifications; it's designed around the Post-16 Study Programme model. This includes a learning plan, work experience, math and English tutorials, and non-qualification activities to enrich our learners' journey and equip them for adulthood. Some learners may face social and emotional hurdles, so guiding them in developing life and communication skills, as well as navigating their emotions through a neurodiversity-affirming curriculum, is crucial. You'll be well-equipped for this in our inclusive communication setting.

You'll receive comprehensive training and assistance to ensure our learners have an exceptional experience. Whether it's honing your curriculum development skills or collaborating with our integrated therapies team to support our learners.

With 5 to 7 learners per class, you'll have the opportunity to truly connect with the learners you assist.

A typical day as a Special Education Teacher involves:

    • Leading classroom activities such as planning, teaching, and assessing learning, especially with your assigned class, covering a variety of subjects and topics related to adult pathways and pastoral care.
    • Tracking and documenting progress academically and against EHCP objectives.
    • Engaging closely with learners to keep them motivated, inspired, and on track to achieve their full potential.
    • Offering inspiring learning experiences, whether inside the classroom or out in the community. You'll engage either one-on-one with learners or in small group settings to help them reach their learning milestones.
    • Working closely with Learning Support Assistants to guide them in effectively supporting the learners.
    • Being able to design and refine a custom curriculum for each learner. You must be adaptable in your teaching approach since some learners may focus on independence while others aim for employment.
    • Identifying instances where a learner's progress is at risk and areas where improvement is needed. You should be dedicated to understanding each young individual and their unique requirements.

To excel as a Special Education Teacher, you should possess:

    • Patience, empathy, and resilience – All the learners you'll assist have diverse neurological profiles, impacting their learning and communication patterns.
    • Strong communication skills – Vital for this role as you'll be interacting with various individuals at different times, including learners, parents, or other involved parties. You must contribute to a range of resources and share information effectively.
    • Engagement in EHCPs and designing a curriculum based on the specific target outcomes of your learners.
    • Flexibility and adaptability – Not every day goes as planned, so you should be comfortable with handling unforeseen changes.
    • A sincere interest in pursuing a career dedicated to educating individuals with diverse needs.

In exchange for your dedication, you'll receive:

    • Holidays – You'll work during term time for 42.4 weeks per year but will receive annual leave to cover the remaining 9.6 weeks.
    • Pension scheme – Based on your contribution of 5%, we'll add 3% to the pension scheme.
    • Learning & Development Opportunities – We offer extensive learning opportunities for team members to enhance their skills.
    • Discounts – Access exclusive discounts through the Blue Light Card and our employee benefits platform.
    • Wellbeing Support – Your well-being is our priority. Gain access to mental health and well-being assistance. Additionally, our therapies team provides monthly confidential check-in clinics and group reflective practice sessions.
    • Cycle2Work – Make use of the cycle-to-work scheme to buy a bicycle at a discounted rate.
    • DBS – We cover the cost of an enhanced DBS check required for this role.

After completing 12 months of service, you'll qualify for our Medicash scheme, covering various medical expenses, immediate access to a GP, life assurance equivalent to x2 your annual salary, and additional high-street discounts.

At Phoenix Learning and Care, we take pride in our diverse workforce and strive to foster an inclusive environment where all team members can bring their authentic selves to work without fear of discrimination.

As part of our enhanced recruitment process, successful candidates will undergo pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS check and reference validation.
