Mechanical Design Engineer

Exeter

Up to £40,000 depending on experience

Hybrid working pattern: office based 3 days per week

Renishaw's Industrial Automation Product Division (IAPD) designs and supplies cutting-edge position feedback devices to the worlds of robotics, automation, and manufacturing industries.

IAPD is made up of engineers and technicians all working together to produce market leading products for sale around the world. We use innovative mechanical engineering to turn our core technologies into a range of desirable products for our broad customer base.

Working closely with colleagues in our on-site manufacturing division, we develop manufacturing and assembly processes to deliver quality products that in turn, perform reliably and repeatedly to deliver micron level accuracies for our customers.

The Division is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its design team to work on products, processes and prototyping. A critical part of the role will be the programming and use of the on-site CNC mill and lathe, to enable fast turnaround of prototyping, tooling and production support. You will work as part of a focused, multi-disciplinary team to design, prototype, analyse, improve, and implement products and processes, including precision assemblies.

Responsibilities

Design, prototype and test a wide variety of mechanical systems including precision assemblies, assembly jigs and tooling.

Produce detailed drawings and concise documentation for assembly and test systems, ensuring they can be supported through the lifetime of the product.

Work in a multidisciplinary team of engineers designing and improving innovative products and assembly processes.

Generation of supporting documentation.

Work with a dedicated design team to capture the mechanical requirements for a given product and input to requirements specification.

Use of entry level manual / CNC lathe and mill, taking ownership of the on-site prototyping facilities including equipment upkeep and the health and safety of the area.

Key requirements

Applicants must have served an apprenticeship or have a relevant further education qualification in engineering.

Applicants must demonstrate competency in using CNC equipment and manufacturing high quality parts in prototype quantities.

Previous exposure to CNC programming (CAD/CAM).

Experience using 3D CAD systems.

The ability to work unsupervised on projects and use initiative is essential.

The ability to produce technical drawings to a high standard.

Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.

An aptitude for problem solving in a reactive engineering environment.

Desirable requirements

Experience in designing electrical, mechanical or optical systems.

Knowledge on Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA) and Regulatory compliance.

Experience with motion control systems.

An appreciation of metrology systems.
