    Default job background
    Description

Quantinuum is seeking to hire a NLP/ML research engineer to work with the Oxford-based QNLP team. Quantum NLP is a new field of research aimed at the design and implementation of NLP models that run on quantum hardware. As a research engineer, you will be working primarily with Dr. Dimitrios Kartsaklis.

The Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) team at Quantinuum follows a two-stage process, involving (1) research, design, and development of models on classical hardware; and (2) transportation of the models to quantum hardware. The current position is related to the first stage, which is the design, prototyping and implementation of "quantum-friendly" NLP models on classical hardware. While the second stage of transferring the models on quantum hardware is not in the main responsibilities of the roles, some form of collaboration between the successful candidate and the quantum-computing specialists of the group will be required.

Candidates are expected to have good NLP/ML experience and very strong programming skills in Python. A substantial part of the work for this role will involve contributions to Quantinuum's open-source QNLP Python library lambeq [1]. Knowledge of tensor-based NLP approaches, such as the DisCoCat model [2] and tensor networks, as well as some familiarity with mathematical models of meaning, is in general desirable.

    You must have:
    • MSc in computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, physics, or related area
    • Strong research skills and experience in NLP and machine learning
    • Very strong programming skills, especially in Python, preferably with industry experience
    Desirable:
    • Familiarity with quantum computing
    • Familiarity with quantum machine learning with parameterised quantum circuits and the relevant literature
    • PhD in one of the above areas or equivalent experience in industry
    • Familiarity with the notion of compositionality and category theory
    • Published work in top-tier NLP conferences
