    Description

    The post-holder will be employed by the Trust as an Apprentice in Operating Department Practice and undertake degree level study, demonstrating the Apprentice standard as set by the Institute for Apprenticeships (IFA) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards of proficiency. Upon completion of the degree level study, the apprentice will be eligible to apply to the HCPC and work under the protected title of Operating Department Practitioner (ODP). The apprenticeship will encompass teaching blocks at University and clinical placements (across the ULHT sites), the work-based learning will encompass anaesthetics', intra-operative and the post anaesthetic phases of care. The university will be selected and commissioned by the Trust.

    Whilst training, salary will be paid at Annex 21 rates for band 5.

    Main duties of the job To successfully complete the Operating Department Practice Degree Apprenticeship incorporating BSc(Hons) Operating Department Practice
    • To attend University and Clinical Placements as agreed with UHLT and the designated university.
    • To complete and pass academic modules and clinical placements to the required standard in order to progress through the programme
    • To ensure timely achievement in accordance with the academic programme requirements
    • To register with HCPC upon achievement of the qualification

Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate own workload, organising equipment and resources as service demands, in accordance with policies and protocols. Ensuring all documentation relating to patient care is maintained, accurate and legible.

    2. Liaise with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team who are involved in the specialized care of patients. Ability to give and receive sensitive and complex information. 3. Prepare and organise clinical work areas to receive patients, ensuring own practice is evidence and research based.4. Act as a patient advocate respecting autonomy and confidentiality. The post holder is expected to treat patients, service users and carers with courtesy, care and compassion at all times, treating each person as an individual by offering a personalised service. Trust staff will adopt behaviours and attitudes which promote, supports and respects privacy and dignity in accordance with the Trust Dignity policies and dignity in care pledges. Staff are expected to challenge poor practice in relation to dignity and treat each other with respect. 5. To continue professional development throughout their study and maintain a record of development that includes reflective learning. 6. Communicate with the patient to ensure they are fully informed in all aspects of their care. When appropriate, ensure that the necessary equipment/personnel are available to help overcome barriers of understanding. Communicate with relatives and patients to offer appropriate information and support. (This may include highly sensitive information). 7. To comply with the hygiene code ensuring all working practice supports infection prevention and control including awareness of hand hygiene and environmental Cleanliness in all clinical areas. 8. In conjunction with senior staff, will participate in the setting, monitoring and evaluation of standards of care for patients.

    9. To undertake Clinical Governance activities: demonstrating evidence of Continuing Professional Development including mandatory training, participation in departmental induction, performance development review, health and safety, risk management and clinical audit, and to receive clinical supervision. 10. Will inform shift coordinator when changes in circumstances occur which affect safe and competent practice.

    11. To seek opportunities for involvement in activities to promote Operating Department practice development.

    12. Demonstrate an understanding of Clinical Governance through every day practice. 13. To undertake any other appropriate additional duties, as required by the needs of the service Person Specification Qualifications Essential
    • Evidence of GCSE at grade C or grade 4 and above or full Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent alternative qualification in Mathematics, English Language or literature
    • To meet university degree course eligibility criteria as agreed between the University and Trust
    • Level 3 NVQ or equivalent in Healthcare
    Previous experience Essential
    • Experience of working in a Clinical Environment
    • Experience of prioritising own time and working to deadlines.
    • Experience of using good customer relations and effective communication skills including face to face.
    • Ability to evidence/demonstrate key values and behaviours in line with the Trust framework
    Desirable
    • Experience as a health care support worker or equivalent in hospital.
    Knowledge, skills, aptitudes Essential
    • A clear understanding and appreciation of Operating Department Practice and its related values.
    • Ability to work with people regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability

    • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills including sound listening skills.
