This is a safety critical role so you will need to get clearance from our Occupational Health team before you start.


Overview of project/role


London Tramlink is the business unit within London Rail responsible for procuring the safe and efficient operation of London's tramways, as well as the strategic development of improvements to the tramway network and the delivery of new tramway projects.


Tramlink currently operates a 28km light rail network serving Croydon, a major population centre in the south of Greater London, and the surrounding areas.

Tramlink has an asset base of circa £200m, and annual ridership of some 27m and annual revenue of in excess of £20m.


The Works Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that the off track infrastructure is maintained within established tolerance levels through the systematic inspection and maintenance (planned and preventative) of the assets, documentation of inspections, recommending and implementing corrective action and management of the team of Works Technicians.


Key Accountabilities

  • Undertake key duties of a Works Technician

To include:
inspection, maintenance, fault finding on all works equipment. Act as a Tramway Worksite Supervisor (TWS) and Possession Supervisor (TPS).

  • Make sure that applicable Tramlink IMS technical standards, are being implemented through their briefing and dissemination to the team. Where necessary advise the Works Manager of inaccuracies or deficiencies that may become apparent through their implementation.
  • Provide support to the Works Engineer either directly or through the team to enable their delivery of technical work such as surveys, asset condition monitoring and fault finding investigations.
  • Supervise external resource as required where provided to supplement the team during times of shortage or where work and upgrade activities require additional people.
  • Provide periodic reporting of activities as required for escalation information.
  • Provide training, mentoring and competence assessment of the team and other operatives where applicable to enable them to fulfill their roles in a safe efficient and compliant manner.
  • Work with the Tfl asset management system to generate and receive work orders, generate completed work returns, record resource (people, materials and equipment) levels and utilisation and inform the Works Manager of deficiencies or deterioration in asset condition along with proposed remediation and timescales such that suitable intervention or renewal can be scheduled within budget.
  • Participate in 1st line on call duties as specified and deputise for the Work Manager when required.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Skills

  • A self starter capable of working on their own initiative.

  • Able to manage team and work to tight timescales.
  • Able to explain requirements concisely and influence others to cooperate with the requirements for the business.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to produce technical and non technical reports.

Knowledge

  • Significant experience in maintenance practices of at least one of the following elements (Structural Examination, Highways or drainage).
  • Knowledge of safe working and the HASAWA.
  • Knowledge of the principles of tramway / railway safety.
  • Qualified in New Roads and Street work (NRSWA Units 19).

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role to include:
  • Highways, Structures and or drainage maintenance or renewal practices.
  • Specification of works, upgrades and renewals.
  • Experienced in the maintenance of records and maintenance of an audit trail.
  • Use of Microsoft Office standard packages.
  • Use of SAP or similar systems is desirable.
  • Use of electronic asset management and collaborative working systems is desirable.
