East Lothian Council seek to appoint a positive, resilient and inclusive individual for the position of Additional Support Needs Auxiliary, at The Brae. The Brae is the severe and complex needs provision attached to Rosehill High School, on the Wallyford Learning Campus. The Brae currently has two classes with a combined total of 14 learners, but this will expand to four classes from August 2024.

This secondary learning facility is designed to support creative approaches to learning, with a range of adaptive teaching spaces. Alongside up to date and digitally enabled classrooms, there is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) wing, a Learning Resource Centre, extensive facilities to support the arts, and a state-of-the-art sport and leisure complex. Learning and teaching on the campus goes beyond the traditional classroom and encompasses outdoor learning and sustainability. The campus also includes a number of community and health spaces to support collaboration between a range of professionals and sectors. The Brae has been purpose built and includes exciting spaces such as a sensory room and hydrotherapy pool.

Each ASN auxiliary will be supported to engage with training appropriate to the role, and will play a full part in supporting the wellbeing and learning of young people with complex needs.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they can:

Communicate clearly and kindly with young people to help reduce any barriers to presence, participation and achievement in school
Work as part of the team around the child, building and maintaining strong relationships in the wider school community
Exhibit the interpersonal skills required to play a full part in safeguarding and nurturing young people, offering the right balance of challenge and support
Use their initiative and work responsively to meet the needs of the young people in their care
Commit to viewing themselves as a lifelong learners, seeking out and taking up opportunities to continually improve their practice

Job Requirements

Relevant Qualifications
Good standard of general education.
Experience of working with or caring for children with additional support needs.

Nursery Only: SSSC registration or agreement to register within 6 months from the date of appointment to this post is essential.

PVG Membership
This post is considered as Regulated Work with vulnerable children and/or protected adults, as specified in the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.

All preferred candidates for posts carrying out regulated work with these groups are required to become a PVG Scheme member, or undergo a PVG Scheme update if they are already a member, prior to any formal offer of employment being made by East Lothian Council.
