    Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse

    Department - Paediatric Unit

    Band 7 £43,742 - £50,056 per annum pro rata

    Hours: 30h per week, 9 months Maternity Cover

  • Qualifications And Knowledge : Do you have an NMC registration as a Children's Nurse with 4 years post registration experience and a Mentorship or equivalent qualification and in-depth understanding of National Guidance. Do you have the willingness to practice by using updated evidence and implement evidenced based guidelines?
  • Skills : Do you advocate for your patients and place them in the centre of the care you are providing? Do you have effective negotiation and analytical skills? Do you have effective communication skills and ability to perform well under pressure?
  • Experience: Do you love to work together with your multi-disciplinary team, are you able to demonstrate successful implementation of effective evidence- based practice?
  • Care and Integrity : do you continuously look for ways to improve care? Do you have initiative with safeguarding your patients?
  • Ownership : Do you feel the need to lead, to take responsibility, and to drive care forward whether working autonomously and as part of a Team?
  • Collaboration & Contribution: Do you enjoy contributing to the delivery of high quality evidenced based best practice. Do you enjoy listening and learning from your colleagues?

    Main duties of the job

    You will need to be a fantastic communicator, as we have a positive Paediatric Multi-Disciplinary team that work closely together to drive forward best practice. Our Nurses are truly valued by the Management and Medical Teams and effective joined up working is a real asset to our ability to provide holistic care. We will support you to develop into someone who can influence others and effectively manage change supporting the delivery of the Department, Divisional and Trust Agenda's.

    The successful candidate will need to demonstrate their commitment to continuous professional development for themselves and their team: You will have the support of the Matron, the Paediatric Diabetes MDT, our Quality Lead Nurse and a Practice Educator to ensure that you and your team can deliver great care in a busy acute environment.

    Job responsibilities

    Demonstrates and establishes a relationship of trust with patients, carers and families.

    Demonstrates expertise when dealing with complex patients with comorbid conditions and their families who require new skills to live with a chronic condition.

    Adheres to health and safety Trust legislation and infection control policies.

    Communicates and agrees with the patient, carer and family the determined plan of care, which can be complex and sensitive.

    Consider and evaluates the impact (physically and psychologically) on the child and their family / carers. Offers advice and counselling with regard to the psychological implications or refers to other appropriate agencies where appropriate. Ensures, where appropriate, that the patient and their family remain in control over decision making regarding their health / illness.

    Establishes a relationship of trust which demonstrates respect for the inherent dignity of the patient whatever age, gender or religion, socio-economic class, sexual orientation, ethnic or cultural group.

    Diagnoses, symptoms and side effects of treatment in order to improve the effectiveness of care. Improve quality of care and patient quality of life experience through expertise.

    Receives direct referrals from medical staff, nursing staff and patient self-referral. Reviews appropriateness of these referrals.

    Ensures the rights of the child are acknowledged and respected. Acts as an advocate for the child. Is aware of legislation regarding children and young people.

    To act as an expert practitioner in the management of the childs chronic condition, demonstrating advanced clinical skills and knowledge to professional staff and patients in diabetes and paediatrics.

    Qualifications and knowledge

    Essential

  • Registered Children's Nurse
  • 4 years post registration experience
  • Mentorship or equivalent qualification
  • Desirable

  • Qualification in speciality: Paediatric Diabetes
  • Degree in relevant health/education related field (or evidence of significant post-graduate study)
  • Non-Medical Prescribing Course
  • Leadership Course
  • Paediatric Intermediate Life Support qualification- PILS
  • Experience

  • Able to evidence ability to work independently and also within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Able to demonstrate successful implementation of effective evidence- based practice.
  • Good understanding of governance and all it entails.
  • Desirable

  • A minimum of 3 years post qualification working in an acute paediatric speciality.
  • Detailed experience in facilitation/ teaching/ assessing/ coaching.
  • Evidence of effective specialist development within this field, with a working knowledge of current local and national guidelines relating to best practice for children and young people with diabetes.
  • Experience of managing a defined caseload and ability to work under pressure to manage workload and meet deadlines.
