Activities and Responsibilities of the Post

Principle Purpose of the role


We have a rare opportunity for a dedicated, open minded, customer focused and experienced Health and Safety Adviser to join our small, but busy Joint Health and Safety Team, working across our Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies.


You will play a crucial role in developing and implementing effective safety management systems, policies and procedures, and conduct and support the development of risk assessments, providing guidance on best practices to minimise workplace hazards.


Additionally, you will support the investigation of accidents and incidents, identifying their root causes, and recommend corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.

You will develop and implement health and safety management documentation, in accordance with relevant regulations and industry best practices and provide training and educational programs to employees, to promote a culture of safety and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

You will also conduct regular site inspections and audits to ensure compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.


Main Activities of the Role

  • Provide specialist advice and guidance to Senior Officers/Managers in order to meet their H&S responsibilities
  • In liaison with line managers, outline and implement safe operational procedures/systems of work
  • Contribute to the development of H&S strategies and the development of policy
  • Undertake reviews of H&S priorities and contribute to the compilation of annual plans
  • Develop and undertake a programme of site inspections/audits etc and provide reports as required
  • Keep records of incidents/accidents/near misses producing and analysing statistics for management, as required
  • Maintenance and ongoing review of the Force fire procedure
  • Undertake safety alerts as required
  • Attend local H&S departmental and area committee meetings as considered appropriate
  • Design and deliver H&S Training as required
  • Maintain all appropriate administration records and the reference library/archive as appropriate
  • Maintain/develop the H&S Intranet site and publicity material across the Force as required
  • Liaise with the Association of Police Health and Safety Advisers as appropriate
  • Work closely with other members of the H&S Team, assisting with their workload as appropriate
  • Keep up to date with legislation and latest thinking. Maintain high levels of continuous personal development
  • Any other duties that are commensurate with the role and grade as may be requested by management

Person Specification
It is essential that applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Level 4 NVQ in Occupational Safety and Health Practice or equivalent
  • Experience of providing health and safety advice in a large organisation
  • Experience of developing health and safety policies and procedures
  • Experience of designing and delivering presentations
  • Basic keyboard skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to travel as required, mainly within Norfolk and Suffolk
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a team
It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health or similar professional body
Hours of work are 37 per week Monday to Friday. This post is offered on a permanent basis.
