    The Occupational Therapy Apprenticeship programme combines clinical employment, work based learning, and academic learning. It is a fully funded route towards qualification as a HCPC registered Occupational Therapist.

    To qualify for the apprenticeship program the successful candidate must meet the following criteria:

  • Over 16 years old
  • Current substantive contract with UHS Occupational Therapy department of 30 hours plus
  • Resident in the UK / EU for the past 3 years
  • Must have 5 GCSEs at level 4-9 or equivalent including Maths and English
  • Level 3 qualification awarded within 10 years of the start date of course

    This is an Apprenticeship / developmental role.

    The trainee will work towards progression into the post of B5 Rotational Occupational Therapists through successful completion of the Occupational Therapy Apprenticeship Programme which includes the attainment of Degree Standard Occupational Therapist Level 6

    The Occupational therapy Apprenticeship programme combines and integrates both academic and work-based learning. You will be required to continuously develop our skills and knowledge as you progress through the degree programme, so that when competent you can manage and be responsible for a clinical caseload with supervision from a qualified OT.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under regular supervision of registered Occupational Therapist to assist in treatment of individual patients and groups, on the wards, in the Occupational Therapy department and on home visits.
  • Through the apprenticeship to develop understanding of all elements of the Occupational Therapy role. Under the Registered Occupational Therapist to assess, plan, provide intervention and evaluation of Occupational Therapy input.
  • To gather and accurately record information where required, to enable patient referrals to be prioritised.
  • To accurately feedback relevant observations of patient interventions to the Occupational Therapist and other relevant members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To seek supervision from an Occupational Therapist to inform analysis and reasoning, and when more complex needs of situations become apparent.
  • To arrange, under guidance from an Occupational Therapist, for the provision of standard specialist disability equipment and to teach and demonstrate the use of equipment or other techniques to optimise the patient's functional ability, independence, and safety.
  • To have an awareness of good resource management, to maintain and advise on stock and resources necessary to carry out the work of the Occupational Therapy service.
  • To co-ordinate the deliveries and collections of equipment, to keep the stores clean and tidy, to clean contaminated equipment according to local standards and policies, and ensure returned equipment is kept in the designated area.

    Qualifications and skills

    Essential criteria

  • Current experience of working as an OT Support Worker in UHSx Hospitals Trust
  • 5 x GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4 -9 including Maths and English
  • Minimum of a level 3 qualification – A levels, Access to HE Diploma, BTEC / apprenticeship level 3
  • Completed OT B3 level competencies or level 3 apprentice competencies.
  • Able to undertake a range of OT assessments to a competent level.
  • Participate in the induction and training of new staff
  • Effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills demonstrating empathy and sensitivity
  • Experience of explaining own role to OT students
  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience of Multidisciplinary working and partnership working with other agencies
  • Has a working knowledge of physical, mental health, learning disabilities, community and can discuss with meaning what they have observed to demonstrate an understanding of OT role.
  • Experience of writing objective reports which details a patient's ability to complete a task
