    Job Summary

    The Trainee Echocardiographer position offers an exciting opportunity for an 18-month fixed term full-time training post in Echocardiography as part of the Echocardiography Training Programme (ETP) developed by the National School of Healthcare Science and funded by Health Education England.

    Working alongside the Designated Training Officer, the Trainee Echocardiographer will be responsible for their progression through the training programme, completing a mixture of work-based competence and experience in NHS scientific departments. They will also undertake the complementary academic Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Echocardiography and complete the BSE Transthoracic Accreditation process.

    The successful candidate will be trained to BSE accreditation level 2 and will receive a Post-graduate Certificate in Clinical Echocardiography.

    Main Duties of the Job

    • Perform and interpret routine cardiac echo investigations.
    • Perform specialized diagnostics echo investigations.
    • Carry out complex scientific and clinical roles, including those involving direct patient interaction.
    • Analyze and interpret data to compare investigative and clinical options.
    • Initiate innovation, improvement, and R&D efforts and participate in the training of healthcare science trainees and other learners.
    • Conduct audits for continuous improvement in patient care and service needs.
    • Participate in the training and development of university students and junior team members.
    • Communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure a positive patient experience.

    Job Description

    Job Responsibilities

    The trainee echocardiographer will be employed for a fixed term of 18 months to work through a learning programme focused on Echocardiography. They will work under the guidance of the Designated Training Officer to complete the necessary competencies and academic requirements, including the Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Echocardiography and BSE Transthoracic Accreditation.

    Post-qualification, graduates from this scheme would be eligible to apply for Clinical Scientist equivalence and HCPC registration.

    Education and Training

    • Successfully complete the training and assessment programme to achieve certified competence awarded by the BSE.
    • Undertake training in core competencies within the host department and other placements.
    • Take responsibility for personal learning and development by recognizing opportunities to learn and maintaining a personal portfolio of learning.
    • Maintain knowledge of recent scientific developments and attend mandatory trainings.
    • Participate in internal and external assessment processes.

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • 1st or 2:1 class degree in Cardiac Physiology (PTP) or a relevant scientific subject.

    • Explain analytical, scientific, and clinical aspects of work to various stakeholders.
    • Develop proficiency in performing routine and complex techniques accurately.

    Desirable

    • Have an understanding of quality control and management assurance in a scientific context.
    • Understand the NHS long term plan and the future of echocardiography.

    • Able to identify and address problems associated with scientific equipment and test results.
    • Good IT skills and knowledge of common computing packages.
