    Job summary

    The construction of a new surgical hub at theTrusts Dewsbury site is now well underway, and we are recruiting registered nurses and operating department practitioners, ideally with theatre experience, who are ready to take on a new challenge.

    By joining the team, you will help providehigh-quality care to our patients in a theatre environment. The hub will bringtogether a specialist group of staff all under one roof, working as a team toreduce waiting times and improve patient experience.

    A comprehensive training and induction package willbe provided to everyone, along with the opportunity to develop new skills.Several hubs have already opened across England, making a significantdifference to both patients and staff.

    Once complete, the hub will provide two theatres,four major treatment rooms and ten outpatient clinic rooms. High volume, lowcomplexity day procedures will be carried out, including plastics, oral andmaxillofacial surgery, gynaecology, pain management, urology, vascular,colorectal, general surgery, and upper gastrointestinal tract.

    The roles can be undertaken by a registered ODP or registered nurse; training will be provided to ensure each role is performed with confidence.

    Although the hub is due to open in summer 2024, weexpect anyone recruited to the roles will start from March 2024 onwards.

    Main duties of the job

    Postholders will participate in thedevelopment and delivery of a brand-new service and mustdemonstrate a willingness to learn new skills, adapt and embrace new ways ofworking.

    It is vital that candidates have an understanding ofworking under pressure with high volume, low complexity patients. A keyrequirement is the ability to be flexible and work within all specialties: scrub, anaesthetic, recovery, circulating, and escortpractitioners.

  • Scrub practitioners areessential to the operating team working alongside anaesthetists,surgeons, and healthcare support workers. They support the surgeon and ensurethe availability and sterility of equipment, ensuring it is accounted for
  • Anaestheticpractitioners ensure that patient anaesthesia is as safe and effective aspossible
  • The recoverypractitioner will prepare equipment and drugs to care for patients safely after an operation, monitor their condition, and provideappropriate treatment until they have recovered, including managing pain,discomfort or complications
  • The circulatingpractitioner is vital to the surgical team, providing a linkbetween the theatre and the rest of the hub
  • Escort practitionersprovide essential support and care when taking patients to theatre
  • Performance reviews will monitor the ownership of individual learning anddevelopment to ensure service requirements are met. It is important to maintain awareness of national and regional initiatives aligned with the running ofsurgical hubs and patient experience.
