    Main duties of the job

    As a qualified Nurse, you will co-ordinate and provide treatment to an identified group of patients under your care with the responsibility to assess, plan, implement and evaluate their care using evidence based practices.

    In your role, you will need to ensure that assessments and care plans reflect the psychological, emotional, social care, treatment, interventions, risk management and physical healthcare needs of patients. The assessment and management of risks associated with the working environment also form an integral part of your responsibilities and you will be expected to follow appropriate policies and Trust procedures relating to them. Additionally, you will champion service user safety and drive continuous improvement in the workplace.

    As a Registered Mental Health Nurse, you will be responsible for the safe custody, control and administration of medications and take appropriate action/measures to provide safe administration as prescribed to patients.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    To plan and implement nursing care for people with mental health and physical health needs, as appropriate to the clinical speciality.

    Assess and manage risk associated with the working environment ensuring appropriate Trust policies and procedures are followed accordingly.

    To update knowledge and skills in line with NMC guidelines.

    Practice the role of named nurse to an identified group of patients.

    To have a working knowledge of current care needs of all patients when acting as shift leader.

    Use a range of therapeutic techniques when managing patients with challenging and unpredictable needs including when this leads to aggressive incidents.

    Ability to lead and manage a cardiac arrest situation

    Be professionally responsible for adhering to Trust Policies and Procedures.

    To be aware of and have a working knowledge of all clinical policies relating to practice.

    Maintain meaningful and accurate patient records on a day to day basis.

    To ensure that all patient records comply with issues relating to confidentiality and safe storage.

    Undertake surveys or audits as necessary to own workplace and occasionally take part in research relevant to the workplace.

    To assist the Ward Manager and Matron in service development plans and projects and be involved with at least one practice development project.

    Undertake all work as guided by the NMC protocols and Code of Conduct.

    Work within Codes of Practice and Professional guidelines.

    Co-ordinate shifts effectively on a day to day basis.

    Effectively co-ordinate patient care as necessary on a shift to shift basis and take responsibility as a designated clinical shift leader.

    Organise own time and that of junior staff and students.

    Provide support to all Team members to ensure the smooth running of the ward.

    Provide day to day practical training for staff on procedures relating to the care of people with mental health problem, as appropriate to the clinical speciality.

    Allocate and monitor work delegated to staff.

    Supervise junior staff.

    Order supplies for the workplace as necessary and ensure their use is kept within budget.

    Follow procedure on handling patient money and valuables.

    To ensure all identified risks relating to the care environment are acted upon and reported to the appropriate personnel immediately and ensure this is implemented and reviewed as required.

    Communicate complex and sensitive information and overcome barriers to communication as appropriate to people with mental health problems, according to the clinical speciality.

    Communicate sensitive information to patients and/or relatives/carers concerning appropriate physical and/or psychological conditions.

    Provide support to relatives, carers and colleagues appropriate to caring for a person with mental health problems.

    Ensure that, wherever possible, patients are fully involved in and consulted about the care planning process.

    Attend meetings to represent nursing as necessary and feedback information from the nursing team.

    Ensure the patient care needs are carried out to a high standard as reflected in the care plan.

    Ensure that active de-escalation and diffusion techniques are used to minimise risk of physical aggression. If physical restraint is required, this must be carried out using recognised PMVA techniques and knowledge and adhere to policy and procedure.

    Write patient reports as instructed by senior colleagues regarding patients.

    Respond to emergency situations as they occur and ensure appropriate support networks are used as necessary.

    To be creative in finding solutions to problems as they arise.

    Provide care for people with mental health issues who have complex needs and may communicate these in challenging or maladaptive ways.

    Impart unwelcome news in a sensitive way to colleagues, relatives/Carers and patients.

    Be exposed to frequent stressful events in the workplace ensuring these are managed appropriately and available support networks are used
