This is a fantastic opportunity for a proactive payroll professional to join Islington council's dedicated Payroll team.

Applicants should have experience and knowledge of payroll processes and have the desire to help colleagues and customers.

The Payroll Officer role provides a comprehensive payroll service to departments across the council and schools.

The successful applicant will be required to interpret payroll instructions, ensuring that changes are in line with organisational policies and legislation.

They will also be adept at completing complex manual and overpayment calculations.


You will build good working relationships with colleagues across Payroll, HR and other stakeholders, to ensure that information is interpreted to allow for the accurate payment of salaries.

  • Ensure that duties are undertaken with due regard and compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation and other legislation ensuring the integrity and security of confidential information.
  • Build relationships with internal and external specialists to keep ahead of emerging HR and specialist trends, ideas and innovations, and keep ahead of changes.
  • Provide relevant information, data and reports to support the design of tailored Payroll policy and process solutions.
  • Participate in crossfunctional projects that support the design and implementation of Payroll solutions.
  • Provide relevant information to support the development and monitoring of budgets.
  • Support the delivery of pay and reward programmes by providing relevant and timely information and efficient administrative support.
  • Provide up to date data on current total reward and recognition costs.
  • Use available technology effectively to access relevant payroll content to resolve customer issues.
  • Comply with organisational procedures and legislative requirements. Provide coaching and training to other staff in statutory and payroll related matters.
  • Deliver service excellence, customer care and display strong customer service ethos even through times of change.
  • Assist in writing and updating payroll procedures for consistencies, best practice and quality standard.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of annual returns for TP and other pension schemes, in conjunction with third party payroll providers.
  • Prepare and submit leaver and change of hour details onto the London Pension Fund Authority (LPFA) secure website.
  • Assist in the checking of pay awards and statutory/contractual changes affecting pay, making appropriate adjustments to pay where necessary.
  • Crosscheck other team members' payroll input and calculations in line with audit requirements.
  • Process emergency manual payments, including complex calculations, as required and update relevant systems accordingly.
  • Calculate overpayments.
