    Job summary

    We are looking for enthusiastic colleagues to join our existing team of Acute Medicine Consultants at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. We currently have a team of Consultants with areas of special interest including Respiratory, Diabetes, Renal and Intensive Care.

    Our department includes an Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Short Stay ward as well as a Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC).

    Opportunities for teaching are available in our simulation suite and clinical skills area. Other areas of special interest are encouraged.

    Standard job plan of 10 PA, the exact job plans will be agreed with the successful candidates.

    CLINICAL CARE

    *To have oversight of all team activity during that clinical session, and provide support to other registered and non-registered clinical practitioners when needed.

    *To provide appropriate supervisions to junior doctors, ACPs and clinical practitioners

    *Administrative duties related to patient care

    *Contribution to undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education activity, including AHPs as part of the multidisciplinary team.

    *Regular participation in departmental and directorate meetings.

    *Consultants are encouraged and supported with research projects.

    *Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues' periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.

    Main duties of the job

    Clinical

    Responsibilities include ward rounds of our footprint of 94 inpatient beds, assessment of patients presenting to same day emergency care(SDEC) and full participation in the Acute Medical rota covering , shifts. Weekend ward rounds are included on a 1 in 6 basis.

    The post attracts 10 PAs, including SPA in the expectation that career grade medical staff undertake additional roles as part of their normal agreed job plan. The post holder will have responsibilities across the department, but there will be opportunities to develop subspecialty interests depending on experience and service needs.

    Clinical Governance

    To attend accredited conferences and meetings to update own clinical practice, teaching and management skills, in line with CME requirements.

    Management

    The post holder will be accountable for clinical matters to the Clinical Service lead

    The post holder will be encouraged to take on specific elements of service development within the Department. This will be mutually agreed following discussion with the Clinical Service Lead and incorporated into the post holder's job plan. In addition, the post holder will be supported and encouraged by the speciality to develop their own areas of interest, which contribute to the wider development of Acute Medicine as a speciality.

    With mutual agreement of CSL/Clinical Leads, the post holder is expected to deputise and represent the Department as required, both within the Trust and externally.

    Job responsibilities

    Accountability

    *The post holder will be immediately accountable to the Clinical Service Lead. The post holder will be expected to undertake yearly appraisal as per GMC guidelines and to respond to any identified development needs. Annual appraisal in line with revalidation is expected to occur as a GMC requirement.

    These duties and responsibilities are not intended to be exhaustive. Duties may be subject to review in the light of changing circumstances. Duties will be reflected in a job plan, which will be subject to annual review with the Clinical Service Leads and the Divisional Director.

    The post holder will be provided with the necessary IT equipment and access to training to be in a position to meet these objectives. Office space and secretarial support will be provided although both may be shared.

    All consultants in the department are managerially accountable through the Clinical Service Leads to the Divisional Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Directorate.

    *Candidates are required to hold CCT or equivalent in Acute Medicine.

    *The successful candidates will provide necessary educational and clinical supervision for junior doctors and other health professionals working in their team. In addition, participation in the departmental and Trust wide teaching programmes for the relevant junior medical staff and members of the multidisciplinary teams is expected.

    *The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Directorate including support to the General Manager and Group Support Managers to achieve their objectives. Work in collaboration with colleagues in other Directorates within the Trust.

    *Work within the Trust's framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the development of clinical policies and to supervise or lead quality improvement projects and audits.

    *The list is not exhaustive and all these would be discussed and a Job Plan agreed at the start.

    *The appointee will be managerially, but not clinically, accountable to the Deputy Divisional Medical Director and Clinical Service Lead

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • *MBBS or equivalent
  • *MRCP or equivalent
  • *Entry on the GMC specialist register for General Internal Medicine and specialty interest via (a) CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), (b) CESR or (c) European Community rights
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development including CME
  • Higher degree (eg MD or PhD)
  • Experience

    Essential

  • *Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required to gain UK CCT in general Medicine and appropriate speciality
  • *Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of acute problems.
  • *Ability to function as independent operator in relevant procedures
  • *An understanding of the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit.
  • Desirable

  • *Ability to function as independent operator in ultrasound
  • *Experience gained from working in and developing acute medical units
