    Former or current primary school teachers to mentor volunteer maths tutors
    This is a role for former primary school teachers - and also in-service teachers with huge energy.
    Our volunteer tutors who work one-to-one with children in state primary schools have no teaching background.

    The Mentor role is to help these tutors to deliver effective support, so that the children acquire confidence, skills, and a sense of achievement in maths.

    Success in this one area can improve a child's overall educational and life chances.

    Your core role will be to support volunteer tutors in at least one of our partner schools over the academic year by providing advice in specific areas of the curriculum or with behavioural issues.

    Further develop our written and video support material which our volunteers use to work with the children.

    • Help develop our overall offering and processes.
    All of our tutors are London based and volunteer in a school local to them.
    However, the Mentor role is largely or wholly remote.
    What training we will provide for you

    We established Number Champions in 2018 to help transform the lives of state primary school children who struggle with numeracy or lack confidence in maths.

    Early intervention can put these young children back on track to achieve their full life potential, in a world where some fluency with maths and numbers is an essential building block.

    We train volunteers to support children in Years 2 and 3 (six- to eight-year-olds) in developing age-appropriate maths skills and in gaining confidence.

    Volunteers run weekly one-to-one sessions of 25 or 30 minutes, in principle working with the same child for the full school year.

    Sessions are in school time, in the school but outside the classroom.

    The goal is that children gain a sense of real achievement and engage fully in classroom maths lessons, with positive impact on their educational and life prospects.

    Former and current teachers, volunteering with us as 'Mentors', train and support our volunteer tutors and help us to develop dedicated resources for them to use with the children.

    Our volunteers' work has consistently shown a highly positive impact on children's learning and confidence in maths, and we are keen to deliver our proven intervention to as many children as possible.

    From September 2023 we should be partnering with over 30 schools across 13 London boroughs, with about 100 volunteers supporting nearly 300 children.

    We believe that we are the first and only charity supporting numeracy systematically in primary schools in this way.
