The Centre for Criminology is looking to appoint a suitably-qualified early career academic to a 12 month Departmental Lectureship in Criminology.
This is to cover the short-term absence of one member of staff and the partial buyout of a number of staff to undertake externally-funded research projects.
The post-holder will be expected to undertake research; to teach and assess students on the third-year undergraduate criminology option and on the MSc in Criminology & Criminal Justice; and to support the work of the Centre for Criminology.
The Departmental Lecturer will work under the supervision of the Director of the Centre for Criminology, currently Professor Ian Loader.
The postholder will be required to plan and deliver the core Research Design and Data Collection course and teach or contribute to up to three seminar options in the MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice as required; plan and deliver up to six one-hour lectures and one class for the third-year law option 'Criminology and Criminal Justice'; supervise the dissertations of MSc students in Criminology; undertake advanced academic study to underpin lectures and class teaching; engage in assessment and university examining; take an active part in the work of the Centre for Criminology under the direction of the Director of the Centre, including acting (if so requested) as a member of the Board of Studies and/or other committees of the Centre or the Faculty of Law.
Applicants should have excellent knowledge and understanding of criminology and criminal justice; hold, by the time of appointment, or be close to holding, a doctorate in Criminology, or a related discipline; experience of university teaching at an undergraduate or postgraduate level; preference may be given to candidates with experience of delivering seminars at postgraduate level and a demonstrated capacity to make a substantial and significant contribution to research.
The post is full time and fixed term until 31 August 2025 and will be based at the Centre for Criminology, Faculty of Law, St Cross Building, St Cross Road, Oxford, OX1 3ULEnquiries about the post may be addressed to Dr Katrin Müller-Johnson, katrin.mueller- will not be a member of the selection committee.
The closing date for applications is midday on Tuesday 7 May 2024. Interviews are likely to be held as soon as possible after the closing date.Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit TWO items of written work (of about the length of a thesis chapter or article), published or unpublished and arrange for three references to be submitted before the interviews take place.
Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and ethnic minority candidates, who are under-represented in academic positions in Oxford.
