    The Barnsley In-Patient Occupational Therapy team have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and dedicated Band 6 practitioner to become part of our Barnsley

    The service is embracing positive change and developing pathways of care to meet the diverse needs of adults and older people within an acute inpatient setting.

    We are looking for a skilled Band 6 OT to join our team and provide specialist assessments and therapeutic interventions for service users currently in receipt of in-patient mental health care.

    The post is a full time position (37.The post holder will work alongside a dedicated multidisciplinary team comprising consultant psychiatrists, senior clinical psychologists, nursing staff and physiotherapists.

    The team consists of band 6, band 5 OTs and OT assistants. The service operates over 7 days with OTAs covering weekends & Bank Holidays. Shifts are 8.30, & staff are expected to work one late shift a week. We are a supportive therapy team that work closely with the wider MDT.

    We adopt a recovery-based approach using evidence-based interventions and professional models of working to inform our practice and ensure the delivery of high-quality care.

    You will be involved in providing specialist occupational therapy assessment and treatment for individuals receiving in-patient care enabling service users to engage in a wide range of individual and group based treatment activities.

    You will be actively involved in the promotion of occupational therapy within the service area.

    The post holder will be part of a well recognised service that places emphasis of staff support and professional development and you will be expected to participate in staff training and supervision.

    To manage an individual caseload, providing Occupational Therapy assessments for service users receiving in-patient care and withinthecommunity, prioritising clinical needs and providing an effective service.

    To work with service users to identify Occupational Therapy goals as part of the overall care plan, using occupational therapy assessment tools based on current evidence based best practice.

    To plan and implement a client centred Occupational Therapy treatment programme on an individual and/or group basis, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.

    To demonstrate a broad level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on lifestyles changes and adaptations to the clients social and physical environment.

    To be responsible for providing Occupational Therapy advice in the multidisciplinary team assessment of service users and carers to ensure that an integrated approach to assessment and treatment is achieved and maintained.

    To work proactively alongside ward staff, community agencies and voluntary agencies to provide a seamless service for service users.

    To maintain an effective communication network within the team, and to liaise with other agencies and disciplines from the voluntary and statutory sectors to ensure that service user needs are met.

    To maintain up to date service user records and activity data in accordance with professional and Trust standards.
    To provide an Occupational Therapy perspective in multi-disciplinary team meetings, ward rounds, clinics and case conferences as required.

    To provide Occupational Therapy reports (as prequired) on assessment and treatment by written and verbal reports to Consultants, GP's and other agencies involved, and to ensure that all correspondence relating to caseload is dealt with promptly.

    To empower families and carers to support individuals with mental health problems.
    To promote the positive health and well being of the individual.
    To co-ordinate the day-to-day activities of junior staff in the service area.
    To provide effective guidance and supervision for junior staff.
    To take responsibility for risk management within the areas of occupational therapy practice.
    To co-ordinate statistical collections in line with Trust policies.
    To promote awareness of the role of Occupational Therapy within the team, negotiating priorities where appropriate.
    To participate in development and improvement of the Occupational Therapy service and develop evidence-based practice in the service.
    Policy and Service Development

    To contribute to the appraisal of Occupational Therapy services and to identify appropriate developments in the services provided making recommendations to the Team Leader.

    To contribute to agreed developments in Occupational Therapy service provision.

    To be responsible for ensuring that the policies and procedures of the COT Code of Professional Ethics and Professional Conduct and local and national standards of practice are properly implemented.

    To take a role, in collaboration with other senior staff, in the development of services, including operational planning, and implementation of policy and service development.

    To be aware of national guidelines and legislation relating to health and social care in your specialist service area.
    Training/Education

    To be involved in providing support, guidance and supervision of junior Occupational Therapy staff within the specialist service, as delegated by the Team Leader.

    To undertake regular performance review with the Team Leader in accordance with the Trust appraisal process.

    To be directly involved in the clinical training placements for Occupational Therapy students as required within the area of work and as qualifications allow.

    To contribute to the induction and training of students and other staff from other disciplines.

    To promote the role of the Occupational Therapist to other professions and trainees from other professions, participating in teaching sessions.

    To participate in departmental staff meetings, training, appraisal and supervision sessions.
    To participate in continuing professional development within own specialist area.

    To demonstrate ongoing personal development through participation in internal and external development opportunities, recording learning outcomes in a portfolio.

    To remain informed of current research, to ensure that own Occupational Therapy practice is up to date and evidence based.

    Review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal in line with local guidelines.

    To contribute to the Trusts, Directorates and teams clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda.

    To broaden research and development skills by contributing to evaluation of the Occupational Therapy service in the specialist service area by participating in service related evaluation, audit and research projects to promote evidence based practice.

    To use effective interpersonal skills to encourage service users and carers active participation in the Occupational Therapy process.

    To use effective interpersonal skills to communicate complex or sensitive information to service users where persuasion, negotiation, empathy or re-assurance is required and where there are barriers to understanding such as hostile, antagonistic, vulnerable or at risk service users.

    To establish robust communication networks with service users, carers and other health workers and agencies.
    Substantial post registration experience working in mental health/learning disabilities.
    Experience of a range of mental health/learning disabilities settings.


    TRAINING
    Clinical supervisors training (or willingness to complete).
    To be willing to undertake post graduate training to further skills, knowledge and expertise relevant to clinical area.

    Post graduate training relevant to mental health/learning disabilities.

    Specialist knowledge and application of Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions relevant to mental health/learning disabilities.
    Understanding of occupational therapy outcome measure.
    CPA Care Programme Approach, Risk assessment and management.
    Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance.
    Computer literacy.
