    The Sussex route carries 4,000 trains each day and millions of passengers each month. We are critical to the regional and national economy, keeping passengers moving from the south coast to the capital, as well as internationally with Gatwick Airport in the heart of the route. ​We collaborate with Train and Freight operating companies to deliver reliability and punctuality for our customers.

    You will join the Sussex leadership team who are innovative, thought leading and committed to putting passengers and freight users first; working to get everyone home safe and well every day and successfully delivering for our wide ranging stakeholders.

    As Infrastructure Director you will lead a large team across multiple locations, including many colleagues who work around the clock to safely maintain our infrastructure and keep trains moving. From dealing with the impacts of climate change to maintaining state of the art signalling systems, the role provides lots of variety and the opportunity to be close to the strategic issues affecting infrastructure and public transport in the 21 st Century. Providing professional asset management and engineering leadership for Sussex Route; the role plays a critical part in owning and driving the strategy and innovation that helps us deliver a safe and reliable railway.

    About the role (External)

    Key Accountabilities

    1. Lead, direct and inspire teams to put safety first when delivering the routes infrastructure portfolio of work, and act as a role model in the promotion of safety and environmental excellence across all areas of control.

    2. Direct and manage the Route Infrastructure Engineering and Maintenance teams in line with the Regional operating model.

    3. Manage the development and implementation of safety, asset performance, reliability, productivity and efficiency initiatives. In conjunction with Head of Operations, deliver plans to address customer needs and performance issues.

    4. Lead and direct the development, implementation and optimisation of the Control Period Route Asset Management plan (3-5 years dependent on the Regional operating model) to meet route and regulatory business requirements,

    5. Act as Route Customer for the Capital Delivery programme of work.

    6. Lead and inspire excellence in the quality of service provided to meet customer and passenger expectations. Direct relationships with customers and stakeholders to meet business objectives and deliver continuous improvement in customer satisfaction.

    7. Provide professional engineering and asset management leadership within the route and give guidance to route senior management on engineering and infrastructure issues.

    8. Lead Level 1 assurance for asset safety, integrity and sustainability across the route to manage business risk and performance.

    9. If nominated, direct security and workplace management (estate, facilities and specific duties relating to asbestos, legionella etc.) to meet statutory requirements and optimise the operational estate.

    10. If nominated lead and direct route asset protection (ASPRO) to manage the risks from lineside neighbours and other 3rd parties in accordance with the national framework.

    Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

    Registered Engineer at CEng level with the Engineering Council or equivalent experience

    Proven experience of successfully managing a large complex infrastructure delivery organisation, particularly related to maintenance, renewals, and enhancements

    Demonstratable strong customer focus in a multi-disciplinary team

    Proven knowledge of the strategic management of safety

    Proven strong leadership skills, with the vision and ability to establish cross-functional relationships and drive cultural / organisational change

    Proven ability to influence decision making and build cross functional relationships

    Level 7 management qualification under the Regulated Qualification Framework

    Extensive knowledge of the rail industry

    Degree qualified in a suitable Engineering discipline

    This role is London based but requires essential travel across the route (Brighton to London).
