Bliss, Beauty, and Beyond: Laraaji Interviewed by Stephanie Berzon
The ambient music legend on telepathy, nomadism, and spiritual creativity.
I’ll begin here, on Lenox Ave in Harlem, New York City. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Laraaji is seated in front of a window that opens to the busy street. It begets a faint drawl of city noise, and above it he is telling me stories about his neighbors, a family of European Starlings—an abundant and invasive species of bird that was introduced to Central Park in 1890 by a Shakespeare enthusiast—who made a home in the awning above a business on the first floor below us. “I live with the birds, and I give them space.” The walls around him are painted a California Lilac, and almost every other object in the room is Cosmic Orange. He has spent the pandemic here. He tells me about another time he wore all orange on a hike and came across a male deer. The buck began to knock his hoof into the soil, mistaking Laraaji for a hunter.
