    Job summary

    We are an exceptional specialist Orthopaedic department with a worldwide reputation for innovation and most importantly for excellent patient care and treatment.

    We currently have 5 operating theatres within our main theatre complex involving 2 theatres linked to our major trauma centre. We are currently developing a stand alone 2 theatre orthopaedic elective complex (NANOC).

    We have 37 orthopaedic consultants who specialist in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery, elective and trauma. We are currently one of the largest orthopaedic departments in the country with several connections to overseas programs, local initiatives and research projects.

    The orthopaedic theatre team consists of approximately 80 members of staff. This includes Registered Nurses, Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) who work in both surgery and anaesthetics, Nursing Associates (NA) and theatre support workers (TSW) all working competently to support the philosophy of multi-skilling and integration of theatre personnel.

    Main duties of the job

    We have a unique opportunity to advertise a new position which will support our ongoing development and growth within the orthopaedic service.

    As a deputy team leader in orthopaedic practice the post holder will be responsible for:

    o Managing and coordinating the orthopaedic Supporting the Clinical Leader in providing expert clinical practice in our highly specialist orthopaedic Assisting with the design implementation and coordination of support and development programs for qualified practitioners, preceptors, varied learner and support workers within the specialist areas for the purpose of recruitment, retention and skills To provide expert clinical advice, guidance, leadership and managerial skills which will ensure the delivery of clinically effective service in line with both local and national development plans and Trust policies and procedures

    The role will require comprehensive leadership, effective management and coordination of the orthopaedic service in order to promote a patient centred approach to high quality health care whilst upholding and influencing professional and Trust values.

    Job responsibilities

  • To exercise leadership by personal example, fostering good interpersonal relationships and encouraging high staff morale
  • Co-ordinate and communicate the placement of appropriate personnel/skills across the department and other areas in the Trust, including in the event of untoward incidents MAJAX.
  • Undertake designated responsibilities in the event of a MAJAX in accordance with trust guidelines
  • Participate in the management of resources in the clinical area within the agreed budget.
  • Implement Trust and directorate evidence based policies and guidelines
  • Able to interpret changes in patient physical signs and take appropriate action. Cardiac and Respiratory arrest and resuscitation of patients.
  • Responsible for assembling specialised medical equipment ready for use on patients compartment syndrome monitoring.
  • Ensure that the care of all patients is assessed, planned, implemented, evaluated, and appropriately documented.
  • Deliver a high quality service for all patients within sphere of responsibility
  • Act as role model and be a credible practitioner within the clinical area

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Registered Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner on the appropriate part of the NMC/ Health Care Professions Council register
  • Desirable

  • Have or be working towards a health related degree.
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Significant experience at Band 5, of which some should be in a position relevant to the specialty.
  • Experience of managing and leading a clinical area.
  • Skills
