    Bank Mental Health Support Worker - All Trust sites

    Are you a looking for a new and exciting challenge? Are you highly motivated, innovative, and compassionate about Mental health care?

    We are looking to recruit a number of skilled Bank Mental Health Support Workers to support our Patients with Mental Health needs - the role will primarily be to provide Enhanced engagement and observations of patients with Mental Health needs in an AcuteMedical/Surgical/Maternity/Pediatric setting .

    You will also need excellent engagement, de-escalation and communication skills - you should also have a good knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.

    It is banded at a Band 4 as we only want to attract and employ the very best who are able to work with minimal supervision in a very challenging and changeable environment.

    It is vital that you read the Job description and Person Specification to ensure you meet the criteria to apply, and so you are under no illusions that this role is much more than a Health Care Assistant role

    Main duties of the job

  • Supporting individuals with activities of daily living, performing & recordingphysical and behavioural observations, accurately recording nutritional intake and fluid balance
  • To monitor and, if appropriate, restrict access to any item that could be used by the Patient to harm themselves or others.
  • To ensure that they are aware of the patient's history, including any risk factors, and to commence and maintain timely risk management to manage any known or unknown risks. To liaise closely with the clinical medical teams and to refer to the PLN if psychiatric assessment required when risks or concerns are evident.
  • Using their communication skills, through engagement with the patient, to make a therapeutic alliance and advise the Nurse in charge and the Psychiatric Liaison Nurse of any findings or concerns.

    Job responsibilities

  • Report to the Nurse in charge of the Clinical Area when you arrive at the start of your shift where you will be allocated to the Patient you will be looking after It is not the Bank MH Support Workers decision as to which Patient they look after on a shift
  • Work as part of a designated clinical team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the patients and their family
  • Identification of symptoms and the management of patients in acute alcohol withdrawal
  • Supporting individuals with activities of daily living, performing & recordingphysical and behavioural observations, accurately recording nutritional intake and fluid balance

    Education and Qualifications

    Essential

  • Trained in the Prevention of management of Violence and Aggression
  • Degree in a health related subject such as Psychology or 2 years working clinically in a MH setting or in your 2 nd/3rd year of a Mental Health Nursing Degree course
  • Desirable

  • Degree in a health related subject such as Psychology
  • Trained in Mental Health Risk Assessment
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Experience of working in teams under appropriate supervision as part of a multi- disciplinary team
  • Insight into how to evaluate own strengths and development needs, seeking advice where appropriate
  • Ability to take part in reflective practice and clinical supervision activities
  • Previous Mental Health setting experience
  • Ability to deal with non- routine and unpredictable nature of workload and individual patient contact
  • Desirable

  • Acute Hospital Experience
  • Understanding NHS/ Health and Social care
  • Experience of working in a challenging mental Health setting such as a Forensic MH Unit or Psychiatric intensive Care
  • Skills and knowledge

    Essential

  • Understanding of the scope of the role of the Mental Health Support Worker in context of the nursing and interdisciplinary team and the organisation, and how the role may contribute to service development
  • Knowledge of when to seek advice and escalate to the appropriate professional for expert help and advice.
  • Must be an effective team player.
  • Able to work autonomously or under minimal supervision
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to the management of suicidal individuals
  • Desirable

  • Knowledge of comorbid physical illness in relation to Mental Health patients
  • Personal qualities

    Essential

  • Ability to organise and prioritise own delegated workload
  • Ability to deal with non- routine and unpredictable nature of workload and individual patient contact
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal and nonverbal communication) with advice
  • Able to challenge and educate staff in order to address stigma towards mental Health patients
  • Instinctively wish to act as an advocate for mental Health patients
