    Job summary

    Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust has 320 volunteers carrying out a range of roles, which all improve patient experience. This role is varied, busy and a real privilege supporting our amazing team of volunteers.

    The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, supporting, training and coordinating volunteers, primarily at our Pinderfields & Dewsbury Hospital sites.

    Above all, it is essential that you are a 'people person' who will enjoys working with a diverse group of volunteers, supporting them to give their time and skills to the Trust.

    Please note, there are 2 positions available:

  • hours per week at Pinderfields Hospital (including evenings & weekends).
  • 20 hours per week at Dewsbury Hospital (including evenings & weekends).
  • Main duties of the job

    To coordinate Voluntary Services primarily on the Pinderfields & Dewsbury Hospital sites.

    This involves:

  • Recruiting and Selecting New Volunteers in line with the Trust Volunteering Policy.
  • Carrying our Volunteer Inductions and organising training.
  • Facilitating routine volunteer meetings.
  • Overseeing volunteer rotas.
  • Providing support for volunteers and volunteer mangers.
  • Advising Colleagues as to how they can involve volunteers in their work and developing new roles.
  • Working with the Voluntary Services Team to continually evaluate and improve our service.

    Job description

    Job responsibilities

    To be responsible for the co-ordination of volunteers recruitment, selection, placing, training and supporting volunteers within the ward befriending roles.

    To organise targeted recruitment within the community and raise awareness of volunteer vacancies.

    To undertake the necessary checks including ID, DBS and Trust checks.

    To organise, deliver and document volunteer information sessions and training.

    To develop and deliver volunteer awareness training for staff to enable staff to support volunteers within the organisation.

    To keep accurate and up to date records of volunteers and provide statistical information regularly throughout the project.

    To monitor and evaluate the service.

    To encourage networking and mutual support between volunteers.

    To liaise with ward staff regarding volunteer placements and agree appropriate guidelines.

    To establish and maintain community links with a wide range of voluntary organisations.

    Any other tasks commensurate with the grade of this post at the request of the volunteer administrator/organiser or voluntary services manager, to ensure the smooth operation of the department.

    Work in line with department guidelines and policies, and offer suggestions for improvements to procedures/policies to support continual development of the service.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Sound educational background (4 GCSEs, grade C or above).
  • Desirable

  • NVQ or equivalent in volunteer management/supervision.
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Experience of working with confidential material.
  • Experience co-ordinating/supervising/managing volunteers.
  • Experience of good customer or patient care.
  • Experience of scheduling/co-ordination activities and/or resources.
  • Experience in interview and selection of volunteers/staff.
  • Experience of working with young people and supporting people with learning difficulties would be advantageous.
  • Experience as a volunteer.
  • Desirable

  • Experience of working within the NHS.
  • Clinical experience working within a ward based team.
  • Knowledge

    Essential

  • Good knowledge of volunteer good practice including; legislation and recruitment.
  • Understanding of the need for confidentiality.
  • Skills and Abilities

    Essential

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills including presentation skills.
  • Customer care skills at a supervisory level.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise.
  • Flexibility with working hours (evenings and weekend working required).
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deal with welfare issues, disciplinary and complaints.

  • The ability to be self-driven and to initiate changes necessary within the department to keep abreast of policies and protocols.
