I began my career as a journalist holding senior roles as business editor of Yorkshire Post, Northern Echo, editorial director at Insider magazine and Venturedome.com.

 

I also have wide experience of working in agencies including GREEN Communication, the full-service media and communications agency looking after a diverse range of clients including Warburtons, LINPAC, Above&Beyond Architecture, Lathams Architects, Wensleydale Creamery, Northern Gas Networks, Quest International and Yorkshire.

 

A consistently dependable team player, I enjoy the challenges of managing a team. I lead from the front and by example and help mentor and support those who I am managing while advising and supporting board members. Interim Communications Director, Research Data Scotland

August 2021 to July 2022 

Contracted Communications Manager at Research Data Scotland. The Scottish Government’s commitment to deliver Research Data Scotland featured in the Programme for Government in September 2019 and recognised the social and economic benefits that the new service could bring. RDS is being developed as a not-for-profit organisation. It is a partnership that includes the Scottish Government, other public bodies such as PHS (eDRIS), NRS, EPCC and working in partnership with Scottish Universities. 

At RDS I was responsible for the:

Interim Communications Manager, Border to Coast Pension Partnership

September 2020 to August 2021 

Interim Policy & Communications Manager at Border to Coast Pensions Partnership, one of the largest pension pools in the UK. One of eight national Local Government pools, Border to Coast oversees the investment of pensions assets, bringing together £45 billion investments of 11 like-minded Local Government Pension Scheme funds. At Border to Coast I was responsible for:

  • Development and implementation of external communications and content plan, including press and media engagement, digital media management, media monitoring and reporting, materials development, and issues management 
  • Implementation of internal communications plan – for Border to Coast employees and with our Partner Funds
  • The end-to-end development and management of events, both internal and external (conferences) 
  • Development and delivery of the annual report and stewardship investment reports and quarterly stewardship report

  • Developed Investment Insight content for print and video

Corporate Affairs Manager at Interserve plc (now Interserve Group Limited) 

November 2016 to September 2020 

Corporate Affairs Manager with Interserve Group Limited responsible for all media and corporate relations including political engagement with Whitehall, Westminster and local authorities. This covered:

  • Daily crisis communications function during the company’s fraught transition from a FTSE-100 business through to its re-financing and pre-pack administration.
  • Raised the profile and protected the reputation of the company’s divisions in the face of negative press and parliamentary comment
  • Busy press office during a 12-month period for the business during a hostile take-over bid while liaising with lenders, shareholders and staff
  • Managed and successfully delivered the communications plan regarding Interserve Construction’s delivery of the NHS Nightingale Hospital Birmingham during the COVID-19 crisis achieving coverage in national, regional, trade and broadcast media
  • Delivered crisis communications response following major cyberattack on Interserve Group Limited which disrupted the business for more than six weeks
  • Developed a thought leadership profile for key directors with op-ed articles placed in key trade titles

 

Interim PR & Digital Communications Manager at Zen Internet 

December 2015 – November 2016

At Zen I introduced, for the first time, a content management and PR programme for each division of Zen Internet.

  • Successfully raised profile of Zen in the UK’s crowded ISP market achieving Which? Recommended Provider for Broadband
  • Established the company’s first style guidelines, social media policies, messaging matrices for each division and developed SEO friendly content and managed all social media engagement and industry award submissions
