    About the team/job

    EMBL-EBI is seeking a Research Programme Officer to assist with the delivery of a programme of research projects under the supervision of our Research Group Leaders. The Research Programme Officer will work with the relevant Research Group Leaders to develop and deliver an integrated programme plan that ensures that project deliverables and milestones are met alongside compliance with internal and external processes and requirements.

    This role entails the full range of scientific project management responsibilities including liaising with a variety of internal teams covering research administration, legal/contracts, finance and IT security.
    It is important that the role holder interacts well with others to get things done in differing research contexts across diverse teams. Specifically, the role will support Research Group Leaders in areas such as planning and coordination of external grant applications, research project monitoring, staff recruitment, events and meeting planning including developing agendas and taking notes, keeping stakeholders and teams up to date, financial planning, and governance and compliance in areas such as bioethics, data protection and research contracts.



    Your role

    The initial programme of projects includes large national and international consortia, including the Stratified Medicine Paediatrics study, a new ERC funded collaboration, and several research projects with Genomics England and other national and international collaborators.

    The Research Programme Officer role provides an exciting opportunity to develop your skills in a wide range of research-related areas. The nature of the role is suited to someone who has a research background with some experience of research and project management and delivery.

    You will work closely and collaboratively with the Research Group Leaders as well as your counterparts across EMBL-EBI. The role will suit someone with an entrepreneurial spirit who is interested in identifying and solving complex problems in a professional and positive way within a diverse research environment.

    • Assistance in the organisation, planning and preparation of grant applications to relevant funding agencies, working with internal Grants Office colleagues and equivalents in collaborating organisations.
    • Supporting the management and administration of the existing externally funded grants and internal core funding. Tracking expenditure and ensuring that the funding aligns effectively to the benefit of the science and funder requirements. Working with financial and other teams across EMBL-EBI and collaborating organisations as required to ensure delivery of reports e.g. to funders as required.
    • Support the Research Group Leaders with recruitment, working with the EMBL-EBI HR team.
    • Supporting the Research Group Leaders in applications to the EMBL Bioethics Committee where required.
    • Supporting the Research Group Leaders in identifying, requesting access to and managing controlled access datasets necessary for their research, ensuring compliance with IT security and other requirements.
    • Supporting aspects of organising and planning relevant strategic and project-related meetings for the Research Group Leaders, with assistance from the Research Office. Drafting meeting notes; tracking and following up on actions.
    • Assisting in the preparation of publications, press releases, material for websites and other external communication around the research programme when requested.
    • Knowledge sharing with other teams across EMBL-EBI, including the Grants Office, Research Office and Contracts team.


    You have

    • Undergraduate degree in the life sciences or other subject that is relevant to the remit of EMBL- EBI.
    • A Ph.D. or Masters relevant to work undertaken at EMBL-EBI, or equivalent work experience in a scientific or technical environment.
    • Demonstrable experience that is relevant to writing grants and reports.
    • A high degree of ability in handling numerical or financial data and demonstrated attention to detail.
    • Good organisational skills, the ability to prioritise different tasks and to manage your own workload.
    • The ability to handle confidential information and all situations with diplomacy and tact.
    • A high level of independent working and initiative.
    • Excellent networking skills and demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships across teams.
    • Excellent verbal and written English language skills.


    You might also have

    Experience in the following areas would be advantageous but not essential:

    • Experience with biomedical datasets, including the ethical considerations and processes used to manage access to these.
    • Experience in coordinating complex tasks or projects across a team or a number of partners.
    • Experience of research contracts and research governance matters.
    • Experience with European Union research funding.
