    Job summary

    This is an exciting time to join the Greener NHS programme following the commitment by the NHS in its multiyear plan Delivering a 'Net Zero' National Health Service to become the world's first carbon net zero national health system and the appointment of the NHS first Chief Sustainability Officer. This commitment reflects growing evidence of the health impacts of climate change/air pollution and recognition that it is not enough for the NHS to treat these problems - from asthma to heart attacks and strokes - it needs to play a part in tackling them at source. It builds on the NHS existing sustainability commitments in the NHS Long Term Plan.

    This role is part of a dynamic team supporting the NHS to solve some of its toughest are uniquely placed to look across the health and care system, to better understand and reduce the environmental impacts of health and care, and save thousands of lives and hospitalisations across the country.

    The Greener NHS team works closely with both corporate and regional teams across NHS England, with local health systems, Trusts and other stakeholders. The postholder will lead and support the delivery of Greener NHS portfolio, working with teams across organisations to reduce the environmental impact of the NHS, by working with the NHS Estate and Facilities teams to reduce food waste and by working with ICBs to improve local air pollution

    Support and inform the identification and delivery of carbon savings across the NHS, aligned to cost reduction, efficiency, and improvements to patient care. Utilise knowledge of working in a frontline healthcare environment, or in a climate science field, alongside issue-based problem solving, research review, and analysis.

    Lead strategy and carbon quantification projects related to specific portions of Delivering a Net Zero NHS, and the Long Term Plan, as well as other adhoc requirements.

    Lead across governance and operations for workstreams, providing high quality professional secretariat, planning and running workshops, and ensuring monthly deliverables are achieved and reported.

    Work across the new NHS England and the wider health sector to support the delivery of commitments and interventions and provide advice on sustainability issues.

    Work with government and across the sector to ensure that external funds are used effectively in order to reduce energy costs and usage, and improve operational resilience. Provide clarity, confidence, and resolve issues as required.
