    We are a purpose-driven startup on a rapid growth trajectory, looking for a Data Protection Officer (DPO) to establish and advance our data protection function. The DPO will be instrumental in securing our data, ensuring compliance with regulations, and enhancing our internal data management processes.

    The Data Protection Officer (DPO) plays a vital role in upholding data privacy standards within our organization. Responsibilities include educating staff on data compliance, leading security audits, and serving as the key liaison with data protection authorities.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • You will spearhead the implementation of robust data protection procedures, including DPIAs, DPAs, and a comprehensive risk register.
    • Conduct thorough assessments of current data practices, identify areas for enhancement, and establish benchmarks for compliance.
    • Offer expert guidance on data protection, ensuring adherence to relevant legislation and advising on information disclosure.
    • Oversee responses to data breaches, manage information requests, and develop compliance-related policies and protocols.
    • Collaborate with teams to create essential documentation, policies, and training materials for data protection.
    • Provide ongoing training to staff, assess risks, and monitor compliance with regulatory deadlines.
    • Lead privacy-focused initiatives, ensure Privacy by Design principles are met, and stay updated on changes in legislation.
    • Participate in working groups, develop policies, and provide support on data protection issues.
    • Offer advice on various data protection matters and maintain privacy compliance across the organization.
    • Contribute to privacy awareness through training, policy development, and procedural guidance.
    • Stay informed on regulatory updates, industry trends, and best practices in data protection.

    Person Specification

    Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

    • Knowledge of UK data protection laws, privacy regulations, and Human Rights Act.
    • Prior experience in data protection, privacy law, or information security.
    • Expertise in DPIAs, DPAs, and risk management.
    • Practical experience in data protection roles, ideally in a fast-growing environment.
    • IT proficiency, including cloud-based tools, and familiarity with UK data protection regulations.
    • Strong communication skills, analytical mindset, and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently or collaboratively, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality.
    • Degree in law, IT, or related field.

    Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

    • Adaptability, analytical thinking, and ability to work under pressure.
    • Independently research regulations, laws, and modify responses accordingly.

    Terms of Appointment

    • Eligibility to work in the UK, with occasional travel required.
    • Based in or near Oxford, with on-site work at least 4 days a week.
    • Flexibility in working hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
