The Head of Governance is responsible for ensuring that IfATE's governance framework supports the highest level of decision-making across the organisation and, leading the Board's secretariat, for setting the strategic direction of IfATE's Board and its respective committees in delivering our objectives.


The post holder is responsible for ensuring the coherence and effectiveness of our corporate level governance, up to the Board, ensuring full integration of governance.

The role also manages the relationship with the DfE sponsorship team.


The post holder is responsible for managing a wide range of relationships with senior stakeholders including non-executive members of the Board (including its non-executive Chair) Executive Leadership Team, senior managers and external stakeholders.


This role is suited to an exceptional governance practitioner ready to lead a team of governance professionals to ensure a strategic and sound governance offering as well as day-to-day secretariat functions.

This role, along with the Head of Legal, reports to the General Counsel and Board Secretary.


Person specification:


  • Be the strategic lead for the operation of the Board across IfATE, ensuring it can deliver its function in supervising the operation of the organisation and in meetings its strategic plan.
  • Lead and manage the Board secretariat in delivering a firstclass governance and secretariat service to the Board and Committees, ensuring the efficient and effective running of all meetings.
  • Advise the Board and executive on all governance matters.
  • Lead the relationship with the DfE sponsorship team.
  • Design, facilitate and deliver on important Board projects such as board effectiveness evaluation and others as required.
  • Provide principal support to the Board in setting the strategic direction of the Board and its committees, ensuring that:
  • the forward programme of meetings is proactively managed and focused on delivery of organisational objectives as set out in the Business Plan; and
- the Chief Executive is guided and supported in respect of key decisions to deliver the IfATE's strategic priorities.

  • Support the Board to establish the necessary policies, processes, information, time and resources to function effectively and efficiently.
  • Ensure compliance with standard Board procedures.
  • Ensure good information flow within the Board and its committees, and between the executive and nonexecutive.
  • Accountable for developing and maintaining a forward programme for the Board and committees, setting a strategic agenda for them to work towards to achieve IfATE's aims in line with strategy, business cycles and programmes.
  • Oversee induction, training, professional development and annual appraisals for Board members and Board evaluations.
  • Together with the Chair and senior executives, periodically review corporate, Board and committee governance and consider any improvements.
