    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity to join the psychology & psychotherapy forensic mental health team at River House, Medium Secure Unit, Bethlem Royal Hospital. We are advertising for a Band 8a post, based on a male acute ward at River House. This is a newly adapted post as part of service developments in the forensic pathway to better meet the needs of service users detained within secure conditions. We welcome newly qualified applicants with robust professional training and relevant experience in either forensics or working with complex need.

    This post is available (4 days per week). If applicants are seeking full-time employment, we are happy to discuss additional opportunities in the department that can meet this need. As one of the few Trusts in London we are also proud to offer flexible working, and happy to discuss requests at the interview stage. In this role you will be able to work Monday to Friday in the time frames 07:30 to 18:00 to support work life balance.

    Main duties of the job

    The postholder will be responsible for the delivery of psychological assessment and intervention, in both individual and group modalities, to patients residing on Thames Ward. The post also places a strong emphasis on staff support and consultation to manage a complex and risky population with multiple needs and risks. The role will also comprise additional senior duties to support leadership of the psychology inpatient service, and involvement in the delivery of a central therapies programme to service users across all wards in River House.

    The postholder will be required to work autonomously within BPS / HCPC / APC / BPC / UKCP / BACP / BABCP / ADMP-UK guidelines and codes of conduct, and local policies and procedures, taking responsibility for decisions about psychological care with the support of supervision.

    About us

    The inpatient provision is part of the South London & Maudsley Forensic & Offender Health Pathway within the Behavioural & Developmental Psychiatry Operational Directorate. The male wards include two acute wards and two rehabilitation wards. Each ward has a multi-professional team that includes dedicated qualified and assistant psychology provision, and some trainee psychologist provision.

    Bethlem Royal Hospital is based in a beautiful setting in over 200 acres of green space in the London Borough of Bromley, South East London. The hospital has easy access to nearby main roads and free parking. The site is within walking distance from of Eden Park and West Wickham overground stations.

    The postholder will be aligned for direct clinical provision to Thames Ward. They will join a forensic clinical psychology & psychotherapy team that provides inpatient and community-based forensic services in SLAM. The male medium secure inpatient service at River House is also an integral part of the South London Partnership (SLP) collaboration with Oxleas and Southwest London & St Georges Foundation Trusts. There are close links with low secure wards on site and community forensic mental health teams, as well as other mental health services, prisons and criminal justice agencies.

    Job responsibilities

  • To provide highly specialist psychological assessments, formulations and interventions for male clients of the acute inpatient service including assessing/working with mental disorders and offending behaviour.
  • To provide culturally appropriate psychological interventions with carers or families of referred clients when required.
  • To assess and monitor risk and draw up appropriate risk management plans.
  • To act as co-ordinating psychologist for the ward caseload, taking responsibility for co-ordinating assessments, producing CPA and other relevant reports.
  • To contribute to the effective working of the team or service and to a psychologically informed framework for the service.
  • To contribute to the team or services delivery of accessible and acceptable services to diverse local communities.
  • To be proactive in challenging discrimination and support the development of culturally competent services.
  • To advise other members of the service on specialist psychological care of clients.
  • To contribute to service development through undertaking and participating in appropriate projects.
  • To be responsible for the allocation and/or clinical supervision of the work of trainee psychologists/psychologists/assistant psychologists/psychotherapy trainees/students with support from the principal psychologist.
  • To contribute to the appraisal of staff, as appropriate.

  • To undertake occasional teaching and training of pre and post- qualification psychologists / psychological therapists and specialised training to other professions as appropriate.
  • To contribute to the development of the knowledge and skills base within the Thames team by maintaining an active awareness of current developments in psychology and mental disorder assessment and treatment and by implementing knowledge gained in practice.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • oEntry-level qualification in applied psychological therapy/mental health/social welfare profession and demonstrable practice in this field (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level/supervised practice/additional training) that has been accepted for the purposes of professional registration.   • oAdditional training beyond entry-level qualification in a specialised area of psychological practice through formal post-qualification training (PG Diploma or equivalent), OR a combination of specialist short courses and/an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice-based learning in a specialist area of clinical practice, assessed by a registered body and/or an experienced clinical supervisor to be of equal level to a Postgraduate Diploma or higher.   • oCompleted training course in clinical supervision. (A/I)
  • oRegistered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist, and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC OR registered with the professional body appropriate to professional training and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the registering body (A/I)
  • Desirable

  • oQualification or accreditation in a specialist assessment and / or intervention with mentally disordered offender population (A/I)
  • Experience

  • o Evidence of having worked as a clinical specialist under supervision in a relevant area (A/I)
  • oExperience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature. (A/I)
  • oExperience of supervising assistant and trainee psychologists / therapists having completed the relevant training. (A/I)
  • oExperience of selecting and administering specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessments, interpreting and integrating complex data that require analysis, interpretation and comparison, drawn from several sources. (A/I)
