    We are recruiting for a Clinical Scientist - Radiation Protection who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

    The Radiation Protection Department at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre provides a physics support and radiation protection service to a number of radiology departments across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, West Essex and North West London. The department is involved in optimisation of cutting-edge CT scanners, cardiac catheterisation labs and imaging in radiotherapy.

    We are looking for an enthusiastic Clinical Scientist to join our service but will consider applicants still in training at a lower grade. The department has experience supporting staff on the route 2 training path.

    Main duties of the job You will be required to liaise with radiographers, PACS managers, engineers, radiologists and physicists from different specialties in the delivery of IRR and IRMER requirements.

    You will be expected to participate in the delivery of the radiation protection service at a number of different Trusts including:
    • Quality assurance of x-ray systems,
    • Patient dose auditSupport to RPAs and MPEs in legislation compliance.

    In addition, you will receive a High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of your basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of 4,314 and a maximum payment of 5,436 per annum pro rata.

    • Ability to communicate complex information to a range of individuals in both written and verbal formats
    • Ability to use their judgement to analyse, critically appraise and interpret complex data or situations
    • Ability to liaise with other staff within radiology departments (radiographers, radiologists and engineers)
    • Physical accuracy and dexterity in order to be able to manipulate equipment
    • Ability to organise own work schedule
    • Self-motivated and able to work independently, whilst being aware of limits of experience/knowledge
    • IT literacy including Microsoft Excel and Word, and the ability to use a range of specialist IT systems
    Knowledge Essential
    • Specialist knowledge of relevant legislation (IRR17, IRMER17)
    • Broad knowledge of diagnostic radiology QA techniques
    • Specialist knowledge of dosimetry techniques in the calculation of patient dose in diagnostic radiology
    • Basic knowledge of clinical uses of radiology imaging equipment
    • Must understand patient and staff risks arising from, x-ray equipment failure and operator errors, and when to escalate incidents.
    Other requirements Essential
    • To manoeuvre, within the limits required for manual handling, heavy loads such as diagnostic dosimetry phantoms.
    • Understanding of, and commitment to, equality, diversity and inclusion
    • Must be able to concentrate where the work pattern is unpredictable.
    • Be flexible in their approach to coordinating workload
    • Be prepared to work in an environment where there is a radiation hazard
    • Be able to travel easily between Trust Sites
    • Be able to work both independently and within a small team.
    • Be aware of own limitations and when to ask for advice from senior members of the team

    Previous Experience Essential
    • Some experience of the physics of diagnostic x-ray imaging.
    • Practical experience with a range of diagnostic x-ray equipment and the clinical applications.
    • Some experience of radiation protection in diagnostic radiology
    Desirable
    • Practical experience on more complex modalities such as CT or mammography
    • Experience in laser protection work
    • Experience of sealed and unsealed sources
    Qualifications/Training Essential
    • Good (1st or 2nd Class) Honours degree in a relevant subject (physics or engineering).
    • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant branch of physics or medical physics to the level of at least a Master's degree (MSc)
    • Holding or be working to achieve Corporate Membership of IPEM or equivalent
    • The post holder must either hold or be working to achieve HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist in the near future. If they are not currently based in the UK, they must be eligible for registration with the HCPC
