    Job summary

    The aim of the undergraduate education role centres around the development and delivery of teaching to year 4 medical students undertaking haematology, infectious diseases and gastroenterology with support from the module leads. There are shared educational duties such as but not limited to being an examiner in UCL medical school exams and helping to organise and deliver UCL medical school assessments with a network of Barnet clinical teaching fellows. Fellows are also expected to provide support to medical students in Barnet Hospital during term time when not scoping at Chase Farm Hospital. The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is a central University College London (UCL) Medical School campus that teaches hundreds of medical students, at all stages of learning, every year across Barnet, Chase Farm and the Royal Free Hospitals.

    This role will suit enthusiastic and motivated Gastroenterology trainees with an interest in education and will provide excellent clinical and educational experience for the progression of a career within Gastroenterology. It is a new and flexible post which offers the opportunity to be involved with undergraduate teaching, curriculum development and student assessment, while also maintaining core clinical skills. Minimum Experience in gastroenterology at IMT3 level is desired although candidates without prior experience may also be considered.

    Job responsibilities

    Run an induction session at the start of each block

    -Provide bedside teaching sessions, case-based discussion groups and simulation/clinical skills sessions

    Work with the medical education administrators to co-ordinate formal teaching sessions including recruiting colleagues to deliver sessions - Collect, analyse, and act on feedback from students

    Be involved in preparations for UCL medical school assessments - Attend relevant meetings with the Barnet education team and the UCLMS year 4 team.

    Appraising the module 4A/B placement at Barnet Clinical role in Gastroenterology: This aspect will comprise 50% of the post and will be based at Barnet Hospital and Chase Farm Hospital. Barnet Hospital is a busy District General Hospital which is renowned for being an excellent and supportive place to work and train. The Gastroenterology services are led by a team of 10 consultants delivering inpatient and outpatient care at Barnet & Chase Farm Hospitals. , The Gastroenterology consultants deliver an on the wards Gastro rota, taking over the care of Gastro emergency admissions, supported by a team of junior doctors. On average of one day per week, the post holder will be the registrar on Olive ward and will carry the registrar bleep, see referrals and support activities on the ward. In the afternoon of this ward day, the post holder will have a therapeutic endoscopy inpatient list in theatres at Barnet Hospital with the supervision of the on-call consultant of the week.

    The post holder will also have one outpatient clinic based at Barnet Hospital. Elective endoscopy takes place in Chase Farm Hospital and the post holder will spend all day Wednesday in endoscopy at Chase Farm Hospital. Depending on the needs of the post holder, this could be 2 training lists and could then progress to 1 training list and 1 service list with consultant support. Depending on clinical interests of post holder, there is also opportunity to join nutrition ward rounds, UGI/IBD MDTs and deliver other post graduate teaching such as IMPACT course and the annual UGIB simulation teaching on pig model at the Royal Free Hospital.

    The successful applicant will engage fully and proactively in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit. The post holder will be expected to engage in continuing professional development. A formal, yet flexible, job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their service lead on behalf of the medical director prior to the commencement date of the appointment.
