    Job summary

    Clinical/on-call responsibilities

  • Undertake the responsibilities associated with the role of a consultant in anaesthesia, with clinical sessions based at The James Cook University Hospital and The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton
  • Contribute to quality improvement and clinical leadership as part of the Obstetric Anaesthesia team
  • Cover for periods of colleague absence due to annual leave and other authorised undertakings
  • Provide professional supervision and management of trainee and specialty medical staff
  • Provide professional supervision of Anaesthesia Associates both in post and in training
  • Be actively involved in the leadership of the department
  • Regular participation at Audit, Governance and Consultant/Centre meetings
  • Take part in annual appraisal, and revalidation
  • Active involvement in audit and service improvement projects
  • Involvement in research is encouraged
  • Teaching both trainees and undergraduates
  • Maintain appropriate Continuing Professional Development
  • Following appointment, all new colleagues are offered the opportunity to take on a leadership, management or administrative role within the Department or wider hospital

    Direct Clinical Care: PAs

    Monday PA

    Theatre List 08:00 to 18:00 ( PAs per session)

    Tuesday PA

    Theatre List 08:00-13:00

    Wednesday PA

    Labour ward session 08:00 to 18:00

    On Call PAs

    Supporting Professional Activities: PAs

    TOTAL:

    Each theatre session represents PAs and includes the associated pre and postoperative clinical time commitments.

    Upon appointment, the Trust allocates as standard practice, each Consultant PAs for core SPA, with up to available for additional SPA roles.

    About us

    There are approximately 80 Consultant Anaesthetists employed by the Trust, including in the specialist areas of Cardiac, Critical Care, Paediatrics and Pain who contribute to the work delivered by the perioperative services department, as well as 36 anaesthetic trainees and 8 locally employed anaesthetic doctors. We provide anaesthetic provision to a wide-ranging elective and emergency programme. This includes specialist services such as major neurosurgery, vascular surgery, interventional radiology and robotic ENT, general, urological and gynaecological surgery. We have a highly regarded anaesthesia research team and a newly refurbished anaesthetic department with well-equipped teaching facilities. We have a recently expanded Perioperative Medicine Clinic and a Post Anaesthetic Care Unit. These posts will support our expanding perioperative medicine service. Completion of a new surgical treatment hub including 6 main theatres and 2 minor procedure theatres at Friarage Hospital is due by April 2025 opening up further opportunities for anaesthesia for elective and day case surgery.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification GMC Registration (including current license to practice) Evidence of completion of RCoA core competencies or equivalent by commencement date. This includes completion of Royal College of Anaesthetist's "Initial Assessment of Competence" and "Initial Assessment of Competence in Obstetric Anaesthesia" ALS or equivalent Transfer training course or equivalent
  • Desirable

  • Additional qualification in research methods, statistics, quality improvement, leadership
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Applicant should be achieving satisfactory progression in their training programme, if relevant, according to ARCP goals. Must have evidence of adequate experience to fulfil service need. This includes completion of Royal College of Anaesthetist's "Initial Assessment of Competence" and "Initial Assessment of Competence in Obstetric Anaesthesia".
