The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has funded a grant in return for meeting project delivery outcomes in respect of the Maritime Regulatory Innovation Framework (MRIF) – Developing regulatory frameworks to support maritime innovation.

The University of Plymouth is part of a consortium lead by Plymouth City Council, including Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the University of Exeter and the Marine and Coastguard Agency, working collaboratively on the project: Maritime Regulatory Innovation Framework (MRIF) - Developing regulatory frameworks to support maritime innovation. The aim of the consortium is to propose a regulatory framework which addresses the industry's needs to drive R&D in a safe, timely and cost effective manner.

The consortium are investigating the challenges surrounding Maritime Regulation and the adoption of new technologies. The existing regulatory regime can limit the R&D and testing opportunities because the evidence base required for certification can often only be created through operation of vessels, yet the certification is a prerequisite to such operations. The fundamental issue that the consortium are keen to address on behalf of the wider maritime community is how to appropriately deal with prototypes and vessels prior to their commercial operation.

This post will offer an exciting opportunity to engage with maritime industry partners and work across the region, linking to several maritime decarbonisation activities currently being delivered at the University of Plymouth.

With experience and ideally a track record of working with maritime operations/autonomous operations. Experience of undertaking applied qualitative and quantitative research outcomes that could convert to research publications/research proposals. You will enjoy working with a multidisciplinary team to define the best solutions of maritime regulation and the adoption of new technologies in marine autonomy from a business perspective.
