Description
The Haemoglobinopathies and Apheresis service is based at St Mary's Hospital a tertiary referral centre which admits children and young people with acute and complex conditions.
The paediatric services at St Mary's Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex Hospitals work closely together to form West London Children's Healthcare (WLCH), and the post holder will be part of a wider multi-disciplinary team, pulling the service values of these three hospitals into the centre of their practice.
This role is open for an experienced paediatric or adult trained nurse who can provide visible and supportive clinical expertise and leadership to our team.
The nurse-led Apheresis unit is highly specialised in the treatment of sickle cell disease and is the largest service in the UK for children from birth up to 19 years of age.
The unit is comprised of 2 treatment beds, providing a 5 day service, with occasional weekend cover and on-call service for emergency red cell exchanges.
We also provide therapeutic plasma exchange and facilitate white cell collections.Nurse specialists have a 4 day working week with hours from 08H00-18H00 with occasional out of hours working for emergency referrals.
The post holder will work in partnership with service users to plan, assess and manage their care using robust evidence-based clinical knowledge and skills.
Additionally, post holders will be required to contribute to updating existing clinical guidelines, as well as being actively involved in quality improvement, working within the wider team to create new guidance as the service expands.
Individuals must be enthusiastic, committed, caring and a team player working together to maintain the high standard of clinical care delivered to our patient cohort.
It is also an expectation that all staff employed who come into contact with children and young people have a duty to safeguard and promote their welfare.
To be a professional expert and role model, leading and co-ordinating paediatric Apheresis education and/or practice development in disease pathologies relating to Haemoglobinopathies and Apheresis proceduresThe Band 7 Apheresis CNS will in conjunction with clinical director, transplant programme, lead nurses for Apheresis and quality managers, is responsible for ensuring that the service meets and maintains the requirements specified by the HTA and JACIE for accreditation
The post-holder will accept referrals to agreed criteria and will practice clinically in an agreed care setting
To understand the training and education needs of staff at within the service and the acute paediatric wards, incl.
PICU who are exposed to such diseasesTo provide expert evidence based clinical bedside teaching and immersive simulated preparedness exercises to all levels of nursing allied health and medical staff
Provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients /clients and relatives/carers in collaboration with the multi professional team, in line with the local and national protocols.

RN Child/RSCN/RN AdultPostgraduate qualification in the speciality Haematology/Oncology and Haemoglobinopathies or equivalent
Recognised Apheresis training/certification
Non-Medical prescriber certification
Experience and knowledge of safety and quality
Evidence of continuing professional development
Min 2 years at Band 6 level working with this cohort of patients
Worked in an environment where Apheresis Nursing is the main cohort of patients
