    Job summary

    Birmingham Children's Hospital is currently recruiting for a Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4 - ST7) in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, available to commence in August/September 2024 for a duration of 6-12 months.

    Main duties of the job

    The post-holders will be an integral part of the clinical team and will carry out the following duties:

  • Reception, examination, diagnosis, resuscitation, treatment and management of patients in the Emergency Department until appropriate transfer to inpatient facility or discharge home. This includes both medical and trauma patients.
  • Supervision of more junior medical staff in the Emergency Department.
  • Participation in the Trust Major Incident Procedure.
  • Participation in delivering teaching to undergraduate students attached to the Department.
  • Attendance at departmental meetings as appropriate.
  • Participation in annual NHS appraisal.

    Job responsibilities

    The following opportunities are available in the department during your job, and we welcome candidates who are keen and willing to help progress the department, or relationships around the department.

    Education/Simulation Dr Kate Edgworth is the Education Lead and runs an active education programme for all clinicians. There is daily teaching including simulation and radiology. Clinics for SLEs run on a Monday afternoon.

    Trauma Dr Tina Newton is the Trauma lead for the trust and is an ED PEM consultant. We are the Paediatric Major Trauma Centre for the West Midlands. Candidates are expected to have an interest in trauma management, and it is desirable to have ATLS or other equivalent trauma qualifications.

    Research working with Dr Stuart Hartshorn, ED Lead for Research and a Clinical Trials Scholar at the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit, University of Birmingham , and if interested any candidate will be supported to develop and complete a research project in PEM.

    QI/Management working with Dr Anand Kanani ( ) runs active audit and QI projects in the department. For those who want experience in higher level QI management, opportunities will be given to complete projects that candidates have an interest in, or guided to suitable projects.

    We pride ourselves on our friendly links with the rest of the hospital and, alongside working with the ED nursing staff, Emergency Nurse Practitioners and the newly expanded team of PEM consultants, fellows will be encouraged to work with other teams and specialties in the hospital relevant to their interests.

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by the time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice including: oMake the care or your patient your first concern oProtect and promote the health of patients and of the public oProvide a good standard of practice and care oTreat patients as individuals and respect their dignity oWork in partnership with patients oBe honest and open and act with integrity
  • By the time of appointment, achievement of one of the following or equivalent; oLevel 1 training competences in Paediatrics. oCT1, CT2 & CT3 Acute Common Care Stem (ACCS) Emergency Medicine (EM) competences at Core Trainee level oEvidence of 36 months training at CT1, CT2 and CT3 level in the specialties that make up the ACCS and CT3 EM programme, but must include a minimum of 6 months in EM and a minimum of 3 months in specialties other than EM. If musculoskeletal has not been completed then a minimum of 9 months EM is required.

  • APLS/EPALS instructor ATLS/ETC provider
  • Has completed personal audits
  • Evidence of degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, or additional evidence based medicine & e-learning modules
  • Evidence of contribution to departmental guidelines.
  • Evidence of active participation in research publications in peer review journals, presentations at academic meetings or poster presentations
  • Instructor (or a recommendation for Instructor) status in an advanced life support course (ALS, ATLS, ETC, EPALS, APLS) or equivalent course
  • Evidence of receiving positive structured feedback for teaching
  • Evidence of completion of a teaching course
  • Management: Evidence of interest and experience in management and leadership
