Are you an experienced Midwife looking to take the next step? Opportunity to gain experience in a Ward manager role to cover the maternity leave of the substantive post holder.


The role will include line management of staff allocated to the Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU), incorporates Maternity Triage and the Pregnancy Assessment Unit.

They will be accountable for the smooth running and maintenance of standards in their clinical area of responsibility.

They will be responsible for providing leadership based on current evidence based practice and will work closely with the other clinical leads, shift leader, Matrons and Obstetricians to ensure an optimum level of safe and effective care throughout the Maternity services.

The post holder will also participate in the maternity bleep holder rota.

To undertake PDR's using the Trust Development Review Process. Agree development plans reflecting maternity service needs and individual development needs and objectives. Facilitate individuals meeting these objectives.

Demonstrate positive leadership and motivational skills in the management of staff as well as detailed knowledge of midwifery and contemporary maternity care

Where appropriate deputise for the Matrons.


Demonstrate a working knowledge and effective use of the escalation policy and participate in the Maternity Operational Managers rota and Trust site management rota.


To assist in the development and review of policies, guidelines, standing operating procedures and patient information relevant to the clinical area.

Lead the preparation of reports relevant to your area when required.

Assess training needs in area of responsibility (MAU) and work with the practice development midwife to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate training programmes

Act as a resource and support to staff in situations which are highly emotive or potentially difficult. Where necessary work with the practice development midwife and/or health and wellbeing to ensure adequate support in place

Attendance and Participation in Maternity Care Forum, Senior Midwife meetings, Risk and Harm meetings, Safeguarding meetings, Perinatal mortality meetings, NWC Reducing stillbirth group and any other forum relevant to role, disseminating relevant information to staff


The Secretary of State has approved the partnership between St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals and Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.
