    Salary band: £90,000 - £110,000

    10% bonus (annual, discretionary, performance based)

    Hybrid work model: 2-3 days in office

    Automata is on a mission to revolutionize the life science industry and empower scientists by bringing automation to every lab.

    We collaborate with labs globally to understand their unique workflows and requirements, creating tailored solutions spanning diagnostics, drug discovery, and synthetic biology.

    Our LINQ platform, encompassing both hardware and software, simplifies routine automation tasks while catering to specialized workflows in a swift, adaptable, and cost-effective manner. We're dedicated to delivering the LINQ Cloud and LINQ Workcell platform, offering new global multi-tenant and single-tenant environments for our clients.

    We are seeking a Staff Engineer to serve as the technical lead, defining and communicating technical deliverables for projects within our Instruments team.

    The engineering team at Automata is expanding to meet the escalating demand for our LINQ automation platform in the life sciences sector. We require highly skilled engineers to understand customer needs, steer customer projects, and guide Product Engineering teams towards viable hardware and software solutions in life sciences automation.

    Staff engineers at Automata play a pivotal role in our technical leadership, engaging in both tactical and strategic endeavors. They are seasoned individual contributors who dedicate at least 50% of their time to coding. We are looking for T-shaped engineers with comprehensive experience and deep technical skills, excelling in simplifying complex issues into achievable outcomes.

    Your responsibilities will include:

    • Executing tactical technical initiatives:
      • Lead architectural discussions for complex systems
      • Break down intricate tasks and propose alternatives to overcome challenges
      • Provide technical advice and upskill team members
      • Participate in project scoping and risk management
    • Collaborating with the technical leadership group:
      • Identify areas for enhancement and efficiency
      • Brainstorm solutions for technical issues
      • Work with peers to explore approaches and provide feedback
      • Contribute to the execution of technical strategies at team levels
    • Being a collaborative and communicative technical partner:
      • Be open-minded and supportive to product and design teams
      • Understand customer needs and collaborate with customer success teams

    Tools and technologies we use:

    • Python for application code, APIs, and SDK
    • C# for integration with Windows systems
    • Protobufs for structured event data serialization
    • MQTT for IoT device communication
    • AWS IoT for debugging and telemetry data analysis
    • Serial, TCP, and gRPC for remote device communication
