    We are very pleased to be seeking to recruit an experienced Band 8a ACP Registered Child and Adolescent Psychotherapis t to join our Haringey Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). The successful applicant will contribute to the multi-disciplinary team, providing specialist assessment, psychotherapy, consultation, training and supervision, alongside generic work, drawing on their previous experience and interests. Our Child Psychotherapy Team consists of team of six ACP registered child and adolescent psychotherapists, including three CAP trainees, working within CAMHS generic team. We also support students on placement who have interest in developing their psychoanalytical thinking. There is a strong interest in psychodynamic work within the wider team and contributions from Child Psychotherapists are well respected and valued. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to contribute the development of Tri-borough 0-5 Service.

    The generic team works with our key partners Open Door and the Tavistock and Portman Clinic, (Tavistock Lifespan, CAMHS and LAC teams) as well as other agencies providing mental health services in Haringey. We also work closely with colleagues from children's social care, schools and colleges, youth offending services, the Child Development Centre, the Royal Free Eating Disorder Service.

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder will provide psychotherapy assessments and specialist psychotherapy treatment including Short Term Psychotherapy (STPP) and parent work, alongside briefer models of generic clinical work. There would be opportunities to provide supervision to other child psychotherapists within the Service and other members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team where appropriate. As part of the Generic team we also have opportunities to work with children under 5 and their parents/carers and our 0-5 Team is currently developing and expanding.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    The post holder will be an experienced Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist with experience of working with children and adolescents and their parents. They will provide both direct and indirect care, working with colleagues within the multidisciplinary team. They will have knowledge / expertise of assessments and therapeutic interventions for children and adolescents with Mental Health issues and neurodevelopment disorders. This position provides opportunities to work with and develop links with health and social care as part of the THRIVE Framework to delivery of care for young people.

    Qualifications/ Registrations

    Essential criteria

    • Post-graduate doctoral level training in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy as accredited by the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP),
    • Full membership of the ACP
    • Formal training in clinical supervision

    Desirable criteria

    • Experience/Training in STPP Short-Term Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and other NICE approved therapeutic interventions
    • Additional therapeutic training
    • Specialist training in supervision

    Skills/ Abilities

    Essential criteria

    • Good organisational and time management skills, ability to plan and prioritise own workload
    • Advanced skills in using a wide variety of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic theories and interventions
    • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychologically based assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
    • Well-developed skills and the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive
    • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
    • Ability to contain, explore and formulate an understanding of high levels of distress both directly with patients and indirectly via supervision of/consultation with other staff
    • Skills in providing professional supervision to members of the discipline and/or other clinicians within the MDT
    • Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to children, young people, families and carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills
    • Skills in building positive working relationships with local colleagues and professionals from outside agencies and contributing towards a supportive and containing team culture
    • Ability to identify, and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour
    • The capacity to contain high levels of complex affect in oneself, for clients and other team members.
    • Ability and confidence to work independently and awareness of when to seek advice/support from others
    • Skills in developing for presentations in public, professional and academic settings, using complex multi-media materials.
    • Good computer/IT skills

    Desirable criteria

    • Well-developed knowledge and skills in the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. Looked After and Adopted Children, Depressed Adolescents, children and young people with severe and enduring mental health issues, children with neurodevelopmental disorders and /behavioural difficulties)
    • Ability to work within a culturally diverse community in a wide variety of contexts including advanced specialist skills for working therapeutically in family homes

    Experience/ Knowledge

    Essential criteria

    • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the ACP or other relevant professional body
    • At least two years post qualification experience working as a Child and Adolescent
    • Psychotherapist in a CAMHS setting, as a part of a multi-disciplinary team
    • Experience of providing psychoanalytic therapies to, young people and their families with a wide range of mental health problems.
    • Experience of working with children, young people and their families/carers presenting with the full range of clinical severity, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems.
    • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a clinician and also within the context of a multidisciplinary team/care plan
    • Experience of self-harm assessment and intervention with both individuals and their families
    • Experience of clinical risk assessment and management.
    • Up to date Knowledge of legislation in relation to children, young people, safeguarding and mental health
    • Experience of using outcome measures
    • Advanced Knowledge of child development/ mental health issues.
    • Advanced knowledge of trauma and attachment
    • Personal experience of psychoanalysis leading to a high level of self-understanding in a clinical context

    Desirable criteria

    • Experience of using an electronic clinical records system
    • Experience of assessing and treating children, young people and their families across the full range of care settings (including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings).
    • Experience of the application of child psychotherapy in different cultural contexts
    • Experience of providing supervision to qualified child psychotherapists or trainees, or other members of the MDT
    • Knowledge of the theory and practice of other highly specialised psychological therapies and assessment methodologies
    • Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision
    • Experience of group work
    • Experience of providing time-limited / brief psychotherapy
    • Knowledge of research design and methodology
