This role plays an integral part in developing the policy that supports this important work, and is at the forefront of ensuring our people are administered accurately when they are discharged.

You will sit within the Personnel Directorate, based in Army Headquarters, which is responsible for developing wider personnel policy for both its military and civilian employees.

You would become a part of the Ministry of Defence who employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) employs around 9,000 MOD Civil Servants located at over 300 locations. There are many different functions and professions delivering key outputs for the Army. As such using data to aid understanding of our workforce is vital.

Job description:

An exciting opening has arisen for an HEO Discharges Workforce Policy (WFPol)

This could be the role for you.

Attention to detail is a key part of this role as you will be the primary Point of contact for the following:

  • Administrative Discharge/Retentions
  • using delegated powers by Head Personnel Policy(Army) (Hd Pers Pol (A)) to receive, assure, record, and approve discharges where Hd Pers Pol(Army) is the Competent Military Authority (CMA).
  • AGAI 49 (Army General Administrative Instruction)
  • As the owner of this policy you will provide policy and direction across the Army, on the termination and discharge of military personnel.


  • Discharge/Retention Statistics

  • This is an integral function as it will advise future recruitment and retention policies for the Service. As part of your function responding to any Request for Information (RFI) s or Freedom of Information's (FOI) initiating positive relationship with the Army Secretariat.
  • Your role requires you to deliver presentations on policy to various military courses across multiple levels of command, including SSS (Staff Support) and AAAC (All Arms Adjutant), as well as on Formation/Brigade Study Days.


You will also be the desk lead for the M3D Tag database of Service Personnel (SP), working closely with Army Personnel Centre (APC) in Glasgow regarding the policy and tagging of Staff Personnel (SP).

Appropriate Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) training will be provided.

Regular engagement with a wide variety of partners as well as collaborating with the wider policy making team.


Person specification:


Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Act as the dedicated Army SME on Discharges
  • Ownership of AGAI 4
  • Ownership of the Termination & Discharge of soldiers providing policy advice and direction
  • Produce Discharge/Retention Statistics answering RFI's or FOI's creating positive links with the Army Secretariat
  • M3D Tag database desk lead, collaborating closely with APC Glasgow regarding the policy and tagging of SP.
  • Delivering Presentations on Discharge policy to a variety of audiences including SSS (Staff Support) and AAAC (All Arms Adjutant) courses as well as on Formation/Brigade Study days
  • Understand the policies evolving within the Workforce Policy Team
  • Advise on policy and aid in the development of policy.
  • Regularly engaging across a broad spectrum of working partnerships as well within the Directorate team
  • This role also provides line management to a very capable and supportive team management structure acting as counter signing officer for a supporting staff member
- teamwork being an invaluable attribute.

  • Use JPA when reviewing casework and must complete appropriate training for JPA CM.
  • Undertake any additional tasks befitting of the role in order to support Workforce Policy Team objectives.
