    Job summary

    Ashford and St Peter's NHS Trust (ASPH) in collaboration with Surrey and Borders NHS Foundation Trust (SABP) are offering an exciting opportunity for an innovative and experienced Practitioner Psychologist to develop psychology provision to the Paediatric team at Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals. This is a WTE permanent position but requests for part-time working will be considered.

    You will be employed by SABP and seconded to ASPH. This role will lead the development of a psychology service for children with chronic conditions including Diabetes, Epilepsy, Oncology and Allergy working with well-established multi-professional teams.

    There will be dedicated time to provide psychological leadership to the newly established CEW (Complications of excess weight). This service is part of the NHS England national pilot, which uses a holistic approach to treating conditions related to obesity in children and young people (CYP). The service aims to assess mental and physical health and social needs and create an individualised holistic plan, which may family-based therapy, behavioural coaching, dietary strategies, and mental health support.

    You will offer supervision and teaching to peer and junior professionals, including Trainee Clinical Psychologists. There will be fantastic opportunities for CPD and the option to attend professional network meetings. There will be the possibility to showcase exemplar work at national conferences like the BSPED.

    Main duties of the job

    To plan and deliver a highly specialist psychology service for children with chronic conditions and oversee its clinical governance.

    To ensure children and families who use the service are involved in development of the service.

    To ensure MDTs are supported in understanding the psychosocial needs of young people with chronic health conditions.

    o develop pathways to ensure children with chronic conditions have their mental health needs and emotional wellbeing screened, and when needed, have access to evidence-based psychological interventions for individuals, groups and families.

    To be responsible for the clinical supervision of psychology staff working in the service.

    To deliver highly specialist psychology assessments, interventions and expert consultation to children with chronic conditions and their families.

    Support clinical governance, outcome measurement and service-related research.

    To work alongside the relevant management and clinical teams to do the above.

    To provide consultation, supervision, and training to the wider network of allied health professionals working in CEW network to ensure weight management programmes are delivered in a therapeutic way.

    To support the CEW MDT in delivering a specialist weight management service to children, young people and their families.

    Job responsibilities

    To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of clinical work and care.     To plan and deliver a highly specialist psychology service (in leadership or advanced therapy role) and to oversee its clinical governance.

    To be responsible for the professional leadership and continued development of a team and/or service area.

    To lead in the supervision and contribute to Individual Performance Review/Appraisal of psychology staff, as required.

    To ensure that the healthcare needs of people using services are communicated to and work in partnership with service commissioners and other healthcare providers for the best outcomes. To positively contribute to Trust and divisional developments in relation to psychology practice. To advocate and represent the service.

    To be responsible for the development and implementation of appropriate policies, protocols and care pathways.

    Contribute to appropriate staff recruitment and contribute to the wider strategic plans regarding psychology recruitment.

    To ensure that the needs of people with protected characteristics are addressed within local services and future developments.

    To demonstrate highly specialist expertise and specialist psychological skills such as specialist psychological assessments, formulation, therapeutic interventions and consultation to support people with complex needs

    To act as supervisor/teacher in teaching, facilitating and supporting pre-registration students and junior personnel and to participate in the audit of educational placements. To participate in new staff induction.

    To research national best practice and enable services to benchmark practice against nationally recognised standards - in partnership with people who use services and carers.

    To lead in developing and conducting clinical audit and research, maintaining current knowledge of research findings and development within the relevant area of practice.

    To influence and develop team cultures that support and encourage innovation, creativity, partnership working and curiosity.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Doctorate in Clinical, Counselling or Health Psychology
  • HCPC Registration as Practitioner Psychologist
  • Completion of appropriate clinical supervision course
  • Desirable

  • Additional academic clinical qualification in therapy
  • Leadership or management qualification
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Extensive post qualification clinical experience working with children and young people with chronic health conditions
  • Experience of leading in clinical practice, service development or project work
  • Experience of supervising trainees, assistant psychologists, qualified practitioner psychologists and others providing psychological therapies
  • Experience of implementing change following audit and service evaluation
  • Demonstrable experience of developing complex formulations drawing on multiple psychological models
  • Experience of advising other professionals on complex psychological issues and risk
  • Desirable

  • Additional academic clinical qualification in therapy
  • Experience of working with children and young people with diabetes
  • Experience of working in a paediatric health setting
